Not A Successful Christmas Movie

Red One's Reviews Are So Bad

By WHB KHNPublished about a year ago 4 min read

Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson's Red One has failed to deliver Christmas cheer. In Red One, Evans plays a tracker who helps an E.L.F. (Extremely Large and Formidable) played by Johnson locate Santa Claus, who has been abducted from the North Pole. The cast of Red One also features Kiernan Shipka, Lucy Liu, and J.K. Simmons in addition to Johnson and Evans.

Jake Kasdan, who previously collaborated with Johnson on Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Jumanji: The Next Level, is directing Red One, which is finally making its theatrical debut. But their cooperation with the poorest reviews is Red One. Red One has received negative reviews despite having a stellar cast and an intriguing concept that is perfect for the Christmas season. Rotten Tomatoes currently gives the movie a 32% rating. As a result, it appears that Red One is not the festive Christmas blockbuster that many had anticipated.

The Reasons Behind Red One's Poor Reviews: Its 32% Rotten Tomatoes Score

Red One was allegedly intended to be the first installment of a franchise akin to the MCU that would center on various holidays. Numerous critics have noted that Red One doesn't even try to be a high-caliber film; it seems to exist solely to make money. According to IndieWire's assessment, Red One will "make you not only bummed about the holidays ahead, but about cinema’s future as well." Red One's narrative obviously failed to connect with critics, as IndieWire also called the film a "blockbuster-sized cinematic lump of coal."

Red One, according to The Hollywood Reporter's assessment, is a "high-concept, CG-saturated bore that lacks heart and infectious humor." Empire's review concurred that Red One is full of lackluster computer-generated imagery and, shockingly, a lack of chemistry between Johnson and Evans, even if it did mention that the movie has at least a "little bit" of heart. In general, they came to the conclusion that Red One "feels engineered in a lab to provide seasonal spectacle."

Reviews of Red One criticize the movie without considering its target audience.

Red One's critics frequently criticize the film for failing to identify its target demographic. Critics point out that Red One does its utmost to please everyone, which is in line with the argument that the film exists solely to make money. Red One, however, fails in this endeavor since trying to please everyone leads to not serving any particular group. While some of Red One's humor are obviously intended for an adult audience, there are other parts that give the impression that the picture is a children's comedy, according to Simon Gallagher of Screen Rant.

Red One is, Gallagher finally decided, "aimed at Fortnite players who wouldn’t be seen dead enjoying a typical Christmas film." Therefore, reviews indicate that no one will appreciate Red One as a whole, even though some demographics might enjoy various aspects of the film. Red One is obviously meant to be as fun as possible, thus it's concerning that no audience will find the entire film enjoyable.

What Critic Reviews Say Red One Does Well

There are, however, a few more favorable reviews for Red One among the many unfavorable ones, indicating that the movie isn't as awful as many critics would have us believe. Red One, according to TheWrap, is "an effectively constructed high-concept action-fantasy-comedy." Even though the film has a lot going on, their review says that Red One's world is entertaining to contemplate, which is a positive assessment if the film's goal is to establish a cinematic universe with a holiday motif.

Red One isn't a groundbreaking action film, according to the Film Verdict, but it is a "fun spin on holiday tropes." As a result, some commentators think Red One is a fun action film and enjoy the Christmas spirit it offers. The Film Verdict also acknowledges, in typical Christmas manner, that Red One's plot has some heart because it revolves around Evans' character discovering the good in himself and appreciating others.

The Implications of Red One's Negative Reviews for Dwayne Johnson and the Film

On November 6, 2024, Red One made its theatrical debut worldwide and made an estimated $26.6 million in its first weekend. Red One is now predicted to earn between $20 and $40 million over its first weekend at the domestic box office. These are honorable people. But with a $250 million budget, Red One will need to earn a lot more money to turn a profit in cinemas, which is Amazon MGM's objective after switching to a theatrical distribution strategy in the hopes that the movie will start a big franchise.

Prior to the Hollywood strikes, Red One was originally scheduled to make its streaming service debut on Prime Video in late 2023. Therefore, it is now uncertain if Red One will have enough of an impact at the box office to justify the establishment of a whole new franchise, even though it will probably be a huge streaming success when it does arrive on Prime Video. In conclusion, Johnson's career in the next years as well as the future of Christmas films in general will undoubtedly be impacted by Red One's box office and critical reception.
