My Review of "The Wrong Missy"
A formulaic formulaic romantic comedy but that isn't a terribly bad thing.

The Wrong Missy has just come out on Netflix and I was interested in seeing what it had up its sleeve. It's as formulaic as all the other Happy Madison Production romantic comedy movies. The secret is I kind of enjoy these formulaic movies. This one has its moments but I'll get to that.
This movie starts off with the main character Tim who is trying to find his blind date. He almost gets into a fight when his blind date plays a trick on him. Soon enough he finds himself in a nightmare of a blind date with a girl named Melissa but she goes by Missy.
Trying to forget that horrible date he vows to just let love happen to him. As he heads off for a work excursion he bumps into a beautiful woman that shares a lot of the same interests as him. Her name happens to be Melissa as well. They have a little moment together and they want to get back together.
Fast forward a little later Tim is asked to go on a company trip. Everyone is asked to bring their significant other since it's in Hawaii. I find this funny because all of Happy Madison romantic comedies always go to some tropical place for them to film. I was just waiting for the set-up.
Tim invites the new Melissa but finds out he invited the wrong Missy, hence the title of the movie. It happens to be the first Missy that he met at the horrible blind date.
I have to admit as bad as some of the jokes were I had a few laugh out loud moments with this movie. There's always at least one big laugh moment with Happy Madison movies no matter how bad the movie is. It's weird because even if it's a really bad moment they manage to have at least one hilarious scene for me. Well maybe there's a few that are pretty horrible that I didn't even laugh at.
Fortunately this movie wasn't too bad. It's not exactly great either. The movie kind of drags a little in the middle of the movie. Luckily they have Lauren Lapkus playing the wrong Missy. I don't know what it is with her but she has some pretty hilarious moments in the movie. Although this movie isn't the best she does give a really good performance. I loved her energy and comedic timing.
The chemistry between the characters was a little off here. I didn't totally buy the chemistry between the two but this could just be because of David Spade's natural mannerisms.
Speaking of David Spade, I would have thought he would have had a few more barbed insults. It's a little weird seeing him not making fun of people but I realize he's supposed to play a nice protagonist in this movie. It just seemed a little off brand for him to be playing such a nice character. He does however play the usual straight man while Lauren Lapkus is the zany crazy girlfriend.
Like all Happy Madison movies there is a boy loses girl and boy gets girl back routine. They really have to smooth the timing of their approach. It seems so abrupt and convenient so that the movie will have a happy ending. This movie could have benefited from a little pacing edits.
Overall, it was a somewhat enjoyable movie especially because I like the usual formula. I wasn't expecting any magic but as I mentioned before Lauren Lapkus does a great job in keeping the attention of the audience. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. It lost a few points because of the pacing issues and a few of the scenes that seemed to drag the movie a little.
