My Review of "The Pentaverate"

A TV series with a ton of potential but never quite reaches its mark.

The Pentaverate is Netflix's newest comedy TV show that popped up. It's special because it's a show from Mike Myers. He hasn't really churned out anything since the Love Guru. It's too bad too because he was huge back in the day with hits like Wayne's World and Austin Powers. After so many years it's nice to see that he's still got some gas left in him.

The show starts off with a man in a helicopter named Hobart. He's a scientific genius and seems to have been kidnapped by the people on board the helicopter. Everything is mysterious and no information is given out. He soon realizes he's not there for ransom but for his knowledge in science.

He's been invited to become a member of the Pentaverate. It's an old secret society of powerful individuals who want to make the world a better place. Unfortunately for Hobart, this means that the secret society had made it so he can't go back to the regular world. They had faked a news story that he died in the most ridiculous way.

Meanwhile our main protagonist Ken is working as a reporter for a local Canadian television station named CACA. He's been there for quite some time and they're finally letting him go. Ken's life has been the news and he's willing to do anything to stay on board the channel.

The producer of the channel gives him one last chance however it has to be a big story or else he'll have to retire. Determined Ken takes on the challenge and goes on a search to find something big.

Somehow he and his plucky friend Reilly discover a conspiracy convention called ConCon. There they get introduced to, Anthony, New Hampshire's number one conspiracy theorist. He tells them details about a secret society called the Pentaverate. Anthony wants to reveal the truth about them and is willing to help Ken with the investigation if he chooses to do so.

Of course Ken agrees to the deal as he's desperate to find some sort of content and the trio go on a road trip to uncover the truth about the Pentaverate. That's basically the story with a whole slew of wacky twists and turns.

This show contains a lot of poop and raunchy humor that I haven't seen in a while. It was kind of a culture shock for me to get back into that sort of humor. If you're familiar with the comedy of Austin Powers you'll be right at home with a lot of the humor. They play on words as well as have wildly obscene scenarios that can make some squirm out of awkwardness. This is definitely not a show you want to watch with your parents.

It's also a very short TV series. It's only six half hour episodes. They could have technically have made this into a movie but I think this works better as a TV show. There are some run on jokes throughout the series and they're sprinkled everywhere even through the opening credits. It's a nice little touch and it's a very Mike Myers thing to do.

The only thing that it falls short in is the level of laughs. I admittedly was chuckling throughout the season but I never had any huge laughs. Perhaps this is better viewed with a group of people to get the right atmosphere for the show. That's why I was debating whether this should have been a movie or a show.

Overall, a lot of the movie won't make totally sense logically and has a few holes in the story. What really matters is that it was fun to watch. Once you get through the introduction of the characters this show really finds its legs quick. I have to give this show a 7 out of 10. Those that are fans of Mike Myers really do have to check out this show.
