My Review of "The Little Hours"
A comedy based in a convent in the middle ages. I think it's message was trying to say that we're all human.

The Little Hours showed up suddenly in my Netflix suggested list and honestly I didn't know what to make of the movie. It stars a pretty big name cast but it's based in a convent in the middle ages. I have to admit I'm one of the few people that actually really liked the movie Your Highness so I had to give this movie a shot. There's no way I could have planned what I was about to witness.
This movie starts off with with the three main characters Alessandra, Ginevra and Fernanda. The three of them are nuns of very different backgrounds. Alessandra is a prissy woman that comes from a well off family. Ginerva is a wound up woman that can't help but follow the rules even at the expense of her "friends". Fernanda is a very unstable and confrontational woman that seems to be hiding something.
Fernanda seems to love to instigate things in the convent. Fernanda with the help of her lackey Ginerva berate one of the workers at the convent and this worker decides he has had enough. He quits his job placing a heavy burden for Father Tomasso.
Meanwhile at the other end of town at the residence of Lord Bruno, there's a servant by the name of Massetto. Unbeknownst to Lord Bruno, Massetto has been having an affair with his wife. Bruno eventually finds out about this extra-marital affair and demands Massetto's head.
Massetto escapes in the nick of time and bumps into father Tomasso. He helps Tomasso with some of the clothes that had fallen into the river and tells Tomasso his story. Tomasso agrees to help Massetto by having him help around at the convent but Massetto must agree to pretend to be a deaf mute.
A whole bunch of hi-jinx ensues with a couple of laughs. There certainly are a lot of crazy things that happen in this movie. Some of the stuff really gets a little crazy and you don't know how far this movie is going to escalate. It just one ups itself constantly with each scene.
I have to also warn you about the language. The language they use throughout the movie is absolutely absurd. Fernanda is the biggest culprit for vulgar language. It makes sense for her to have such language because she seems to be the most unhinged of all of the characters in this movie.
All of the actors were perfectly cast for this movie. They absolutely embody what we would expect for such characters. You'll see a lot of famous comedy actors in this movie as well. It probably wasn't hard for them to cast this movie as it seems that everyone has great chemistry with one another making me think that all of them know each other outside of movies. They're probably all friends working on a joint project.
It's an okay project but I didn't find that there were tons of laughs. There certainly were some and I know what they're trying to do. This movie seems like a movie that I'd have to watch again because I think I may have missed some jokes because I didn't realize what kind of comedy it is.
It's not quite an awkward comedy or a totally goofy absurd comedy. It's a mix of all comedy in here. That made me feel like it was kind of all over the place at some times. By the time I was halfway into the movie I started to get it. The movie started to make sense and I started to like it. This movie does have some getting used to be able to get you to the same pace as the movie.
I kind of like this because it's a totally different feeling to this movie than you're usual comedy. They tried to make something original and I really admire the courage it took them to attempt this.
I think this movie could have used a little more polish though. There is something with comedies and their awkward change in scenes. At times it feels as though the movie was written so that it goes from one comedy skit to another. I find that this happens with a lot of comedies. I'm not sure how they can fix this flow problem with comedies but I rarely see it done right.
Overall, I did have a few gripes for this movie but this doesn't mean that I didn't enjoy it. It was a pretty good time but I had to get adjusted to the movie before it started to grow in me. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. I think I'll probably have to watch this again. Who knows maybe I'll enjoy this movie even more the second time around.
