My Review of "The Buddy Games"
A throwback of how dumb movies were back in the day. You either get it or you'll hate it.

The Buddy Games didn't immediately excite me when I saw the trailers for the movie. In fact, I thought it was going to be a pretty idiotic movie and it is but that didn't get me to watch it. One of the redeeming features about the movie was that I found out Olivia Munn was starring in the movie. The other factor is that I watched Tag and I thought it wasn't too bad. Maybe this movie would be similar. I wasn't wrong but I wasn't right either.
The movie starts off in the past where a group of friends have this annual ritual called the Buddy Games. In these games our juvenile men participate in a bunch of prank games that could seriously hurt themselves or have some sort of humiliating outcome.
Bob happens to be the ringleader of these games. He organizes the games and all of the other men look up to him as a leader. The movie focuses more on two specific characters in this gang of misfits, Shelly and Bender.
Shelly is an alpha male that loves to exude dominance over his brethren whenever he has the opportunity to. Bender so happens to be the one that Shelly humiliates 90 percent of the time in these Buddy Games.
In the very last Buddy Game we see Shelly celebrating his win over the others. He notices that one of his friends has fallen asleep so he decides to further humiliate him by putting his testicles on his friend's forehead in front of his other friends. Yes this movie is quite crude and crass.
Bender has had enough of Shelly's constant bullying and decides to do something about it. You'll see him with a air gun and he shoots Shelly. Unfortunately for Shelly he has a horrible accident and the Buddy Games had ceased to exist afterwards.
The movie is about why they come back together in order to start up the Buddy Games once again, all of the bad memories and broken friendships that need to be mended and getting their mojo back.
This premise was actually quite similar to the Tag movie I watched back about a year ago. It's a bunch of male friends playing a juvenile game and they use this game to regain their friendships. Tag was based off of a true story, this one is pretty absurd and ridiculous.
It can get quite grating to some people that aren't used to this type of humor. This type of humor reminds me of the frat house prank movies of the 80's and early 90's. I haven't seen this type of movie in a long time and it was kind of nostalgic to see this movie delivered the way they did. Most will be shocked that this type of movie was even able to pass through movie studios. Movies nowadays are more sensitive to people's feelings and care for current events around the world. This was the entire opposite.
That's not to say that this movie doesn't have any redeeming value. I lived through the time when this humor was popular and I got the humor. There was even some moments that I thought were pretty funny. Unfortunately for this movie, I don't think a lot of people will see it the way I do.
Also there was a lot of misdirection in the advertisement for this movie. Olivia Munn is advertised in the trailer and on the posters but she's barely even in the movie. I thought this was some really weird false advertising as her love interest in this movie continually calls her on the phone but she doesn't even answer or anything. She just disappears.
Overall, I thought it was a meh movie. I had some fun with it but again this is an acquired taste. There will be a lot of people that will find this movie disgusting and irrelevant. Don't worry I doubt they'll continue to make many of these types of movies the way the world is going. I have to give this movie a 5.5 out of 10. It's not terrible but it's not exactly a great movie either.
