My Review of "Squid Game: Season 2"

Okay, more of the same is a pretty good thing.

Squid Game: Season 2 has been out since 2024. With the new season finishing it up. I decided it was time I can finally check it out. This works perfectly because season 2 is actually more like half a season than a full season. I don't have to wait a full year to see how it ends.

So the season starts off not too long after the end of season 1. I don't quite remember the details of the first season but I do know that Gi-Hun had won the first game. He's awarded the big reward and has a plane ticket to start a new life. Instead, he turns around and decides he wants to end the tournament.

Gi-Hun becomes obsessive over the games and hires all these goons to help find the recruiter for the games. With the large sum of money he has now, he should be able to find the individuals responsible. So he goes on a wild goose chase to find the recruiter.

Eventually he finds the recruiter and gets in touch with the big boss. Things aren't going to go so easy for him because the organizers are very sneaky. They have thought of all of the scenarios where people would try to track them. Gi-Hun had previously added a tracking chip to his tooth to help his henchmen find him if he goes to the island.

Somehow he convinces the organizers to once again allow him to join the games. This way his hired guns can find the island and destroy the games once and for all. Again the organizers are very sneaky and they get rid of the tracking chip and Gi-Hun is once again in the games.

This time around we have a whole slew of new recruits for the games. There are a lot of familiar scenes in this season but they are able to freshen it up. I'm really surprised at how many children games they have in Korea. Are they really able to have this many games for this TV show?

It took me a little while to get used to the new contestants but they started to grow on me as they tell their origin stories. Each one of them, just like the last season have tons of conflict in their heads. A lot of the emphasis is about the vote to get out of the games. This builds upon the politics behind the games. I can see a lot of similarities of this and the realities that we live in today.

That's even more true with the greed and ambitions of the contestants in the game. I can see every one of them as real life people. These are real problems and real concerns. This time there's a little bit more of a modern touch with influencers and the backlash that it has.

With Gi-Hun knowing more about the games than anyone else, he quickly becomes a leader. I think this is a great way to swerve from the first season because he's not against the other contestants. He's actually against the organizers of the games. The same fun twist in the first season hits with this one and it's a doozy.

I like the dynamics of two different stories. We have Gi-Hun trying to get out of the island whereas his henchmen continue trying to find him. Two different mysteries both equally compelling.

Overall, I was able to have almost as much fun in this season as I did with the previous one. It was just such a shame that it would end with such a cliffhanger. That's why I'm really glad I can jump right into conclusion with the third season. The highs are really high and it doesn't end there. Admittingly it is a bit of a slow start to get back into it. I have to give this season a 7 out of 10.
