My Review of "Sonic The Hedgehog"

A surprisingly good family film that kids should check out.

Sonic The Hedgehog had a pretty notorious trailer that came out a while back. I have to admit after seeing that trailer I was a bit concerned with the movie. They had since changed the look of Sonic and when it was released I still didn't see it. Some people have told me that it isn't that bad so I thought why not check it out.

The movie starts out with Sonic running from missiles being blasted at him. He then goes into a flashback to explain his situation. It goes all the way back into the past when he's on his home world. He's basically a rambunctious kid causing trouble and eventually trouble catches up to him.

He's protected by an owl named Longclaw. She sends him to earth with these special rings and tells him to hide because everyone's going to be out to try to obtain his speed powers or something. So since childhood he's been hiding in a small town called Green Hills, Montana.

Over the years he's pretty much been spying on everyone in the town and enjoying his life on Earth. The only thing is that he's been alone for all this time he's kind of lonely. He just wants to make some real friends. From his frustrations of being lonely he creates some sort of gigantic blast that causes a huge black out.

The military catches wind of the black out and hire doctor Robotnik to investigate. The movie goes from tame to zany from there. Jim Carrey's portrayal of Dr. Robotnik is pretty on par with what I would expect Dr. Robotnik to be.

I have to say that they did a good job with Sonic. They made his character endearing and charismatic. He's more of a Curious George character that wants to learn about everything. It never really gets to an annoying level. They know how to draw the line with his exuberance. It also helps that he can take care of himself when push comes to shove.

I've played my fair share of Sonic the hedgehog games in my past and I could tell that they added a ton of little Easter eggs throughout the movie that can make any Sega fan giggle. They exploit a lot of the jokes especially close to the end of the movie. It's a very nice nod to all of the Sonic fans of the past.

This movie is generally geared toward kids and it plays as a really well thought out family film. There's jokes here for both kids and adults so I think everyone can enjoy this movie without too many cliches that will make you groan. There are a few of them here but not to the point where you'll roll your eyes. It's all tastefully done.

All this comes to me as a huge surprise. I originally thought that they'd really kill this movie by trying to make this into a cash cow franchise to milk money from kids. In a way they do this by attempting to end the movie with a tease for a sequel but for the most part they ended the movie properly. I thought that they would take huge liberties and not stay true to the game. Yes, they didn't follow exactly what the game was about but they were as accurate as possible so that they could follow a coherent story line. I have to commend the writers for making this movie.

Overall, this movie was a pretty big surprise to me. I enjoyed this movie a lot more than I expected to like it. It is probably one of the better video game movies that have ever been adapted to a movie. Yes I said it. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. Give this movie a try and I guarantee you that you won't be sorry. I thought it was going to be bad too and I was proved wrong.
