My Review of "Snatchers"

A self aware comedy horror aimed at young adults.

Snatchers came out quietly in 2019. I never heard of this movie until it started streaming recently. It's too bad because it's actually a half decent movie that I think would have done fairly well if it had more marketing. There's some interesting messages that come into play that they twisted to make a bit of a horror movie and you can tell they had a ton of fun doing it on the set.

This movie starts out with the main character Sara. She's a typical high school student with the usual high school worries and anxieties. Luckily she's part of the cool kid clique but with this comes the ever present lesson in keeping up with appearances. Sara seems to have this thing for a guy named Skyler.

Skyler recently spent his summer in Mexico and had broken up with Sara before his trip. Now Sara wants him back and she's really crazy for him. So one night she caves into his demands and well they have some unprotected sex. The whole scene is super awkward and yet you can see how it could have actually happened in real life.

The next day Sara wakes up 9 months pregnant. She doesn't know what's going on and can't really turn to her mother, Skyler or any of her supposed popular friends. Instead she goes back to a old best friend that she's totally ignored for a full year with Hayley.

Being such a good person, Hayley still helps her friend out despite the crazy amounts of disrespect she's received from Sara over the past year. The two are going to figure out what the heck really happened to Sara. In their pursuit of the truth there's a number of even crazier things that happen along the way.

There's a lot to digest in this movie and for the most part it's pretty good. It's very self aware of what it is and what messages they're trying to portray. They know that having an origin issue stemming from Mexico might be a trigger issue with some viewers so they continually mention that they're not trying to be xenophobic. It's pretty clever and funny at the same time.

The biggest message that they want to tell the audience is the experience of a young woman through unplanned pregnancy. They show you what happens in Sara's head and how she can't really tell people about it for the shame of the whole ordeal. Sara also feels such a tie to Skyler despite the fact that he's such a jerk and really not good for her at all.

There's a lot of self reflection by Skyler and I really think that the writers really want young people to self reflect and see what they're really doing in their lives. With all of our selfish actions there are consequences that we don't anticipate on. A lot of the issues could have been easily remedied with some logical thinking but this movie plays it off with some real people based logic.

Although this movie is quite wacky and goofy there is a lot of it that reflects real life. There are so many elements of this movie that I felt was contributed possibly by real world situations. I liked how they implemented all of these ideas into the movie without it feeling like a public service announcement. The pace was still fairly good with all the stuff that they jammed into this movie.

I would also say that for a small budget horror movie they did a spectacular job in editing the movie to look like a scary movie. Unfortunately for those looking for true horror it isn't that scary but the work they did with the set and special effects was pretty good for what they were given.

Overall, I enjoyed this movie more than I thought I was going to. It's a clever young adult movie that may win a lot of viewers through word of mouth. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. I think it's worth at least a viewing for those that are looking for a fun movie for Halloween.
