My Review of "Scream 3"

A fun outing in an otherwise unmemorable sequel.

Scream 3 is the third installation of an interesting franchise. It came out 25 years ago and the only thing that shows its age is the mechanics of how this movie was made. For the most part it is a fun and competent movie. The problem is that it is mostly forgetable. There are a few portions that stand out in this movie but it's nothing will stick with me for a long time.

The movie takes place not too long after the previous sequel. The movie executives are not working on the third iteration of the Stab franchise. This is that infamous movie franchise based on the movie that we're watching. That's pretty funny already because they skipped the send movie and matched it with the number we're watching now.

The Stab franchise is already taking liberties of how loosely it's based on the Scream franchise. I like how they keep blurring the lines between real life movie making and the story of the movies. There seems to be inside jokes throughout this movie that I don't totally understand. It's kind of obvious that they're winking at us as the audience but I don't really understand what they're getting at sometimes.

The major player from the previous movie, Cotton, and his girlfriend are horrifically murdered. This is done in a fashion reminiscent of the previous movies, making us believe the killer must be back. Though, in the previous movies we already know that the killer always changes identities so it is yet another copycat. Somehow this copycat has yet another grudge with our favorite traumatized woman Sydney Prescott.

Admittedly, it was tougher to figure out who the killer is this time because the only recurring characters in the franchise are Sidney, Dewey and Gale. Everyone else seems to have been murdered. In the last movie we had someone come out of the blue so we couldn't have possibly have figured it out. This movie was going to be a bit of the same. Though there were some things that I was able to accurately predict.

This movie knows what you are expecting from it so they try to play around with your expectations. They try to throw you off as much as they can. It's almost jokingly trying to make every scene a jump scare scene. This becomes somewhat of a running joke throughout the movie because it's almost to be expected and I kind of wished they really threw us off at one time to really catch us off guard.

There are some fun easter eggs and cameos in this movie if you've been keeping up with the franchise. Though, if you haven't been keeping up with the franchise you may be easily lost with this entry into the franchise. This movie relies heavily on your understanding of the previous movies. As a stand alone movie this is not quite good. You really have to watch the previous ones in order to have some context into what's going on here.

I'm glad I was able to keep up because it did make the movie that much more entertaining. It's kind of a fun ride for the loyal fans that have been watching. At the time this was supposed to be pinned as the final movie. We know 25 years later that it would not be and it would spawn additional sequels years later.

Surprisingly, the movie does age quite well. Only the methods in which this movie was created seem somewhat outdated. The pacing and the acting methods do feel quite old school and some might like it for that. There are a few notable things in this movie that shine. I liked some of the guest characters. They were pretty zany but made this movie feel like a parody of itself at times. There are also a few fun cameos in there that movie fans will really enjoy.

Overall, this is a fun movie to watch if you've been marathoning this franchise. You have to be up to date with the previous Scream movies to make sense of everything though. If you are, then this is a fun ride. I still don't feel this is a very memorable movie though. I most likely will forget much of this movie as the days pass by. That's why I have to give this one a 6 out of 10.

Scream 3 has some fun elements, like the blurred lines between movie-making and the story. But it's forgettable overall. I had trouble following the inside jokes. And the killer reveal? It was a bit of a letdown. How about you? What did you think of the movie's attempt to keep us guessing?
