My Review of "Scream 2"
Although, I didn't like it as much as the first movie, there are still some cool elements to this movie.

Scream 2 is a horror movie that came out back in 1997. It's only a year after the first movie came out. I'm actually startled when I think back at how fast they made this movie. In some ways, I'm actually impressed that they could pull this movie off in a year. Then again, I can also see the rush job they did to get this movie up and released.
The movie starts off somewhat similar to what you would expect a parody of this movie would start off. They basically have a black couple in watching a movie which is based off the events of the previous movie. This black couple basically perpetuates many of the black stereotypes of black film goers at the time. Normally, people would wonder why they would do this but this is very on brand with the franchise. They talk about tropes that are common in movies.
They eventually get murdered. Again another movie trope is for the black character to die first in horror movies. This basically kickstarts the murder fest that we're about to experience. Yes, the movie was based on the first movie because it's based on a true story. Eventually, Gale, the reporter in the previous movie, had her book made into a movie. This movie is basically an event and all the kids are wild about it.
Though, someone or some group seems to be mimicking the serial murders from the previous movie. We have the surviving members of the previous movie in here but they're all in college instead of high school. There's also a group of new kids to join the fray. Sidney, again is the main hero of this story. The killer seems to be after her despite the fact that the killer of the previous movie died.
Now we're going to go through a head spinning who done it scenario with a new cast of characters. In the first movie, it was kind of obvious who it was but this movie has some weird soap opera like swerves that kind of prevent the audience from figuring it out so cleanly. This nonsensical element of the movie took me away from this movie.
I also found that there is a bit of inconsistent tone throughout the movie. The first part of the movie is pretty wacky then you get a little more serious. Then you get an all out wild action area. Finally, there's a bit of a cartoonish ending. It's kind of all over the place and at times my mind wandered off a bit.
Don't get me wrong, there are some clever bits throughout this movie. They're sprinkled throughout the movie but it felt like different writers had different parts of the movie. After they finished them off they probably compiled their parts into the movie but failed to massage them all together to make it feel like one cohesive story.
Each element of the movie is well put together but the lack of cohesion really messes with the enjoyment of the movie. It's sort of like watching a movie and while it streams from the internet it pauses because it needs to buffer. Sure the whole movie is there and I understand it but it's not an enjoyable experience. It's an element that outshines what I'm supposed to be enjoying in the first place.
Overall, what I did have some fun with this movie. I thought that there were a lot of clever things in this movie. It's fun but it was definitely rushed. Ultimately, it's the fun factor that keeps people coming back. That's why I give this movie a 6 out of 10.
