My Review of "MacGruber"

This is a really dumb movie but I can't deny I laughed at a lot of the jokes especially the running jokes.

MacGruber is a comedy that came out back in 2010. I remember seeing this movie back in the day not thinking much of it but after watching the TV series, I was tempted to check it out again. The dumb humor made me crave for more. Why not go back to the source of that TV show?

This movie starts out with a desolate scene. The area had been hit by some very skilled killers. They have dead bodies lying everywhere. These men are still around and out comes the big boss. They've stolen some sort of weapon of mass destruction.

Basically it's to kickstart their need for MacGruber. He's been away from action for 10 years living in solitary. It all stemmed from the villain, Cunth, that had stolen the weapon of mass destruction in the beginning of the movie. 10 years ago MacGruber was on his wedding day and Cunth had ruined it by killing his bride in the worse imaginable way.

When MacGruber discovers that Cunth is behind this new terrorist group they're after, he decides that its time for revenge. He can't do it alone though. To get this job he has to get the best team possible to thwart Cunth and give him a good pounding.

It's a fairly simple premise and very straightforward story. Nothing about this movie is complicated. In fact, it's more stupid than anything. That's part of the fun though. You kind of have to be in a certain state of mind to really enjoy this movie. There are things that will make you question why you enjoyed it in the first place.

The jokes are very adolescent and everything is over the top. Nothing can really be taken seriously at all. Most of the jokes are even low hanging fruit jokes. You can see the jokes coming a mile away but yet they still hit pretty hard. Maybe I was just in that state of mind to really enjoy such a movie.

Oddly enough, there are a lot of jokes that are repeated throughout the movie. I don't see this often but each time they brought up the joke it would remain pretty funny. I don't know how they did it. They obviously foreshadow certain jokes to hit as well and yet they still work. In some ways it was very well crafted.

The pacing of the movie is topsy turvy though. I found that the consistency and pacing of the jokes was really well done but the pacing of the actual movie and story was a bit long. You'll enjoy the movie more if you focus on the jokes than the movie. There are times where you're wondering where is this going. It almost feels like it's one skit going onto the next. That's not necessarily bad if you consider the movie you're watching. You have to recognize that the jokes come first in this movie.

Watching this movie now I realize there are certain jokes that were intended to be funny because of the time it was made. There are references to old school things like an out of date car radio and MacGruber's car in general. I'm not sure that people today would recognize that they were making fun of the fact that they didn't carry those car radios back in those days. It was more ridiculous back then than it is now. Same goes for some of the old school references where people today don't even know why they're referencing anymore.

Some people may also get pulled away from this movie because MacGruber is not a very likable person. In fact he's probably one of the worst people alive and yet he's the hero of the movie. That's part of the fun though. He's this guy that shouldn't be liked or revered yet he is. He gets his way despite being an utter idiot. It's almost like a Simpsons episode where a guest character can't understand Homer's popularity or success.

Overall, I thought it was a really fun time watching this. That's not to say this is a great movie. It is not a great movie at all. Though, the point of this movie is to make me laugh and it accomplished that. That makes me give it higher points than what people might expect me to give this. I can't forgive the awkward pacing of the story and the aged references. This movie gets a 6.5 out of 10 for me.
