My Review of "George Lopez: We'll Do It For Half"

An all too familiar George Lopez. For fans of his stand up, this isn't necessarily a bad thing.

George Lopez: We'll Do It For Half is a Netflix exclusive that had recently come out. I haven't heard from George Lopez for quite some time and I thought it would be interesting to hear some of his new material. What I got was something that felt very familiar but nothing terribly groundbreaking. I did enjoy a lot of the show but it sort of got tired about halfway in.

Again I haven't heard from George Lopez since the George Lopez show and this stand up special sort of felt like a sitcom. He comes out with a lot of jokes that talk about growing up in a Latino culture. Tons of this material could be used in his old sitcom. They could elaborate on a lot of the jokes that he used.

The thing is that George is kind of talking about growing up in a Latino culture that he grew up in. Today there's an all new generation and they may not necessarily grow up the same way he did. I sort of miss that comparison that he used to use. He didn't even go into some of the changes to Latino culture that we have today. He did however talk about the comparison of old Latino families compared to families of today. It's sort of generic but we know he's implying white families.

He talks about much of the male Latino experience and some of the jokes are pretty funny but a lot of them are pretty much stereotypes that we've already heard from a lot of comedians already. That's really unfortunate because if this was probably 20 years ago I'm sure we would be laughing our butts off but today it kind of feels like old hat.

Some of the things that he talks about are somewhat universal so those that aren't Latino can still enjoy and identify with his jokes. That's always been the case with George's comedy. It's always been accessible.

Oddly enough there wasn't too much variety in the comedy that he used. Most of it was dealing with raising children, health issues and diets. There's no real mention of any real risque issues except for a small talk about immigration in the beginning. Overall the set seemed pretty safe. He's never been a super provocative comedian but it did seem fairy tame to today's standard of comedy.

Still after all these years he's still got his comedic timing. He's really good with his facial reactions and changing of voices to over-exaggerate certain characters that he's trying to depict. Many of you that are familiar with his work in the past will recognize some of the facial ticks an impressions that he uses. He brings them all back with effectiveness but I didn't feel that it had the wow factor that it used to have back in the day.

Some of the jokes kind of felt like he already made the joke before but he's coming back to them. Usually this sort of works when the joke is hilarious but he didn't really catch me the first time so it was kind of boring the second time he used the same reference. It pains me to say that because I really wanted to like this special.

Overall, I still had fun watching this special but mostly because I am a George Lopez fan. Unfortunately for me I kind of droned off halfway into the special. There's so much that I wanted to like about this special but I didn't enjoy all of it. I have to give this special a 6.5 out of 10. I really feel bad for giving this score to him but I really think he could have done a lot better than this.
