My Review of "Deadpool & Wolverine"

If you loved the first two Deadpool movies you'll love this one. Is it worth multiple viewings though?

Deadpool & Wolverine is one of the most hotly anticipated releases of 2024. This movie has been a long time coming and nobody really thought it would be able to happen. In fact, a lot of this movie is based on things that fans of the MCU never thought would happen. There's a part of me that sort of recognizes this movie as an ode to 20th Century Fox's Marvel universe.

Now that Disney has acquired all of Fox's assets it's interesting to see what they have in store for us especially after seeing this movie. There's so much to unpack when you see this movie and there are so many easter eggs in this movie. You could watch this over and over again for the sheer fan service it provides. This review isn't about the fan service though. Is this actually a good movie? That's harder to explain.

The movie starts out with Deadpool going to the set of the movie Logan. We all know that Wolverine died in that movie and Deadpool is determined to dig him up for the movie. Unfortunately this doesn't go as planned for him but we do get an epic fight scene with some multidimensional police and Deadpool.

It turns out due to Logan's death the world that Deadpool lives in is on its last legs. The multidimensional police are looking to decommission it to make way for the main storyline. This is all metaphor for Fox's timeline being erased making way for the mainline MCU. There are some clever little bits but unfortunately the movie constantly spells everything for us as if we won't understand.

To save the Fox timeline Deadpool is determined to jump dimensions to find a Wolverine to replace the Logan that died. When this doesn't work he and the alternate Wolverine are sent to a void. This is where all of the Fox intellectual properties go to waste away. They discover an all powerful mutant that can help them get out but she's maniacal and bent on destruction. Somehow, these two are going to find a way to get her to help them to Deadpool's dimension and ultimately save it.

Along the way they will encounter countless cameos that I for one was shocked to see. You have to understand, the Fox franchises and characters have all but disappeared and to see some of them come back is truly nostalgia at it's peak.

There are tons of easter eggs too. I'm sure if you're a huge fan of the comics you'll get a big kick out of the nerdy goodness that this movie aims to deliver. This movie even adds nods to movies of the past based on the actors who are portraying the lead characters. It's all self-referential and if you're big into pop culture you're going to get a ton out of this movie.

As a movie, I found this movie a bit on the boring side. I found myself excited for the surprises and non-stop nerd fun that this movie provides. If we're talking about the actual story of the movie, it's a bit of a snooze fest. Apart from the cameos and easter eggs I found myself questioning what was really going on in the movie. It was so basic and boring.

There are a number of really fun jokes in this movie but they come at you a mile a minute. As they should because of the character but at times it did feel a bit grating. You have to be in a bit of a mood in order to really appreciate this movie. That's why I feel that this movie is best experienced at a theatre. There you will experience it with fans that will liven the mood and lift your spirits about the movie. It also provides you with the best possible visuals and sound which is a big plus.

As a Deadpool movie it pretty much delivers in all fronts. It's exactly what you expect and want but that's like getting a shiny new toy. You play with it for a bit but you get bored of it after the excitement. In some ways it could be a pop culture thing where you just want to be part of the fun. This is definitely the big thing right now so being part of the hype is part of the novelty.

Overall, I had a great time watching this the first time but I question whether I would actually watch this multiple times for the story. Maybe I'd check it out for things I missed but even then it's only a maybe. It's sort of like the Spiderman: Far From Home movie. I had a hell of a time watching it but it quickly loses its luster and I never go back to it. That's why as a movie I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10.
