My Review of "Chronicle"

A very underrated superhero movie that was very much a product of it's time.

Back in 2012 the YouTube movement was just starting to really skyrocket and people were making vlogs. So Hollywood producers decided to green-light Chronicle as it's premise derives of a kid videotaping his daily life. Today this isn't such a weird idea but back in 2012 kids were still working with camcorders that were as big as a brick. It wasn't as practical as it is with cell phones. In a way this movie was ahead of it's time.

So this movie is about three kids that gain superpowers. There's Andrew, played by Dane DeHaan, Andrew's cousin Matt, played by Alex Russell, and Steve, played by Michael B. Jordan. When this movie first came out all of these actors weren't very known and I guess this was their big break into bigger movies.

Andrew is a loner documenting his life. We see him getting picked on at school and at home. He's constantly talked down to by everyone except for his cousin Matt. His cousin sort of feels like he has an obligation to look after Andrew and is generally a good guy. He wants to be a good guy but in some ways he tries a bit too hard. Then there's Steve, a popular guy trying to become student president but lives a troubled life as well.

Matt convinces Andrew to come to a party so that he can socialize with people. Andrew reluctantly comes but he brings his video camera to record the party. Back in 2012 it wasn't really cool to be recording things. I know that's a hard thing to even think at a student party but yeah it wasn't. Andrew is confronted by some guy thinking that he was taking a video of his girlfriend and he secludes himself from social life.

That is until Steve finds him. Steve and Matt had found this mysterious hole and I guess Matt had told Steve that Andrew had a camera to record it. Matt gets Andrew to check it out and there seems to be some weird stuff going on in the hole. All you hear is a big boom!

The next shot is the three together throwing balls at each other, however it looks like they are able to control the ball with their minds. It looks like whatever was down there in the hole had given them telekinetic powers.

With each day they continue to practice their telekinetic powers and get stronger and stronger. Interesting enough, as they practice together so often the three have grown a brotherhood bond with one another.

Chaos ensues but I won't get into that. The gradual craziness comes in at a good steady rate where the audience can understand the motives as to why people are doing the things they are doing. I thought this was a really well paced out movie.

They also fallow Freudian ideology much like how Star Trek does. There is an Id, Ego and Super Ego. One of the main characters is motivated on pure instincts, he would represent the ID. The Ego is the main character that is motivated by reality. Then the main character that is motivated by morality is basically the Super Ego. You can break this movie apart and really tell that they implemented a lot of popular theories and ideologies. I think this is why this movie feel so grounded on a realistic out look of how people may or may not react if they were granted superhero powers as our three main characters have.

I like that they had such realistic outlooks of how people would use their powers. Not everyone is a good guy. We all have our own past lives that eventually mold us to who we are. What if super powers were given to someone with no empathy for others? A sociopath would do whatever they could to get what they want.

it's a very interesting movie while being really fun to watch. There are a few special effects that don't totally translate well to 2020 standards. For example you can tell that there is some wire work when the main characters are up in the sky. There are also unexplained reasons why we can see and hear our main characters when the whole premise of the movie was to be from taped footage. Oh well, that's not as important as getting the story across to the audience.

Overall, I really liked this movie. I've seen this movie over and over again and still can't get tired of it. The movie really is that good, well to me it is. I have to give this movie a 9 out of 10. it's one of the classics that I can go back to and recommend to just about anyone especially now that everyone is into superhero movies now.
