My Review of "Boss Level"
A mix between Edge of Tomorrow with Deadpool. Did that have your attention?

Boss Level is a 2021 bigger budget movie that was exclusive to Hulu for a while. The problem is that you can't get Hulu in Canada so I had to wait for quite some time before it landed on the Amazon Prime streaming app. I have to admit I was pretty excited to watch it because the trailers made it seem pretty much like a cross between Deadpool and Edge of Tomorrow. Two movies that I really enjoyed. For the most part that is but I only consider this a pretty good movie, here's why.
The movie starts off with our hero Roy. He's some sort of military guy and he wakes up with people trying to kill him. It's very similar in the way of storytelling to the movie Palm Springs. We already know he's in some sort of time loop but we don't know how he got into this time loop. Don't worry all will be revealed later on in the movie.
First comparisons to Deadpool come from Roy's personality. He's a wise cracking guy that is very proficient in killing his enemies. Fortunately for him his enemies always fall under the same pattern so it's easier for him to dispatch them.
Like all other repeat movies Roy has an existential crisis where he wonders what he's doing in this repetitive loop. He has to find himself and find reason to end the reoccurring chaos that is bestowed to him everyday. As we go through the movie we learn what had happened the day before the loop started. We start to get an idea of who had started it and why they had chose him to repeat the day.
It's really a paint by numbers movie that recycles themes and scenarios with similar movies. That's probably why I felt a little bored at some points of the movie. Had you not seen these other movies that talk about repeating the day over and over again this movie will definitely feel fresh to you. I, however, have seen pretty much all of them up until this movie. There are so many repetitions that it's kind of cliché by now. The magic has disappeared but not entirely.
There are a few things in this movie that I found refreshing. There's moments closer to the end that I liked. This is even though, I found some weird obvious inconsistencies. If the day is supposed to be repeated over and over with the same scenarios how can he kill everyone and yet one of the deceased characters shows up in another area? I guess you can blame it on the butterfly effect of his actions throughout the day but really? This is where I tell myself to keep it together and understand that it's an action movie. It's not all going to make sense logically.
An action title it is. There are a lot of great action sequences. Some of them have you cheering for our hero. If you've seen Deadpool you will either love the action sequences or think that they're a little bit of a rip off of Deadpool. The action sequences are different from Deadpool but there's this consistency that makes you think that they're kind of sequences in Deadpool that didn't make it so they put them into this movie. Again that's not a bad thing. A lot of people are going to enjoy them namely myself.
Still if you don't think too much about this movie you can have a really good time. It is an action movie after all. You're not supposed to look too deep into the movie like I did for this one. I kicked myself for doing that halfway into the movie. Once I got over it I started to enjoy it a lot more.
Overall, we're still starved for some good movies even halfway into 2021. Some good stuff is coming out but it's just trickling. This movie is something that will keep you satiated for the next big release. I think you can have a ton of good fun with this if you don't think too much. I have to give this movie a 6.5 out of 10. There was definitely a lot of potential. I just wished they put a little more twists to it to make it stand out.
