My Review of "Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm"

The sequel to the 2006 pop culture phenomenon. This time it's exclusively on Amazon Prime.

Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm has recently come out and quite strategically I might add. It was released a week or two before the 2020 American presidential elections. The previous movie had explored some of the social divides spread across America. He also pushed the envelope as to what is socially acceptable in American society. It was a pretty big turning point in pop culture when the first movie hit.

This movie starts off years after the first movie. Borat talks about how his first movie had made a mockery of Kazakhstan and he was punished for it as a result. He starts this movie off working in a prison camp. He's been imprisoned for his crimes against Kazakhstan. Basically he's a shame to the country.

Miraculously he had served his prison sentence and the government has made a deal with him. He has a chance to clear his name with the country by giving Mike Pence a gift. That gift so happens to be some sort of brilliant monkey. Obviously Borat agrees to the deal and travels to America but before that he gets a makeover to look like the old Borat that we know and love.

Back to America he goes and he finds that things have changed. Everyone pretty much recognizes him now. It's hard for him to do the same antics as he did in the first movie because he's actually a pretty big star now. They worked this into the movie pretty well. It's very funny the way they rewrote the way he interacts with everyone.

There's another addition to the movie. Borat has a daughter and she comes over to America as well. She stowed away with the brilliant monkey in a crate but unfortunately the monkey did not live through the transportation.

This basically changes everything. Borat then has to offer his daughter to Mike Pence instead of the monkey. Through this revelation there's a ton of weird and wild antics that Borat and his daughter find themselves getting involved in.

The movie again finds ways of figuring out the division of America and the limits of social decency. This movie has a little flip to it though. In the last movie you'd see Americans just as buffoons and yes they do that here as well but not as much. The movie kind of flips the script a little by showing the kindness of the American people despite their extreme ideas and thoughts. These people would open their arms to him no matter what crazy situations he got himself into. Sometimes he really seems like someone that you shouldn't be inviting into your home. The kindness and generosity of some of these American strangers is at times very heartwarming.

To an extent I was also wondering how much of it was actually true and which parts were rehearsed. The people that they meet on the street seem very genuine people but you realize that a camera is there taking perfect shots of them at all times. It made me wonder if all of this was staged or was some of it really impromptu and by the seat of their pants.

We never thought we'd see another Borat movie because of the social climate that we live in nowadays but they really pulled it off. It is obviously offensive but only if you don't understand the context of the situations that they bring up. Each offensive scene is based off of a lesson of some sort. They're bringing up social issues that we have today but in extreme versions of themselves.

Overall, I did really enjoy this movie. I thought it was a laugh riot from time to time. I'm really impressed that they were able to pull this movie off without offending too many people. If people watch the whole movie they'll understand what they're trying to get at. I have to give this movie an 8 out of 10. It's made remarkably well and that's saying something when we know everyone's really sensitive nowadays.
