My Review of "A Knight's Tale"

A medieval times movie that was aimed to be updated with the ages but it came out in 2001.

A Knight's Tale is a movie that came out back in 2001. At the time they wanted to make an updated spin on medieval movies. The problem is that something that might seem updated back in 2001 might seem dated in 2020. There's a few elements to this movie that we come to expect but for the most part it is still an enjoyable movie.

This movie starts out with a group of rag tag apprentices. They're helping out a knight to perform in popular medieval combat sporting events. The most popular of these events happens to be jousting. They explain the simplicity of the sport but it's really not too important. You'll understand what's going on even if you don't know too much about the game.

The knight that they were taking care of suddenly dies and the main character William decides to take his place. He's always wanted to participate in the games but never had the nobility to able to. William gets the taste of the games and he loves it. He really wants to continue on but there's that nobility thing that he doesn't have.

Fortunately for the guys they bump into this guy Goeffrey who is a legendary story teller. He's also able to forge papers to make it seem like William is of noble blood. They even find someone to repair his armor.

Each one of their rag tag group of friends has their faults but they all seem to need each other in the end and that kind of builds their relationship with one another. There's not too much focus on them because they all kind of just compliment William's story.

William has a love interest as well of course. She happens to be some sort of woman of nobility. They have a bit of a cat and mouse game going on between them but nothing too dramatic. They just need this to add an element of fairy tale to the mix. I felt like some of it was a little cornball. There are a lot of cheesy moments because of their relationship.

The cornball moments in addition to the rock songs in the movie kind of throw you out of the movie. I know what they're going with the song selection but it did feel a little bit off. They really didn't need to do it but I think they wanted to cater to a younger audience. Even the cheesy relationship moments seemed to be made for a younger audience as well.

They make a few statements throughout the movie. The armorer is a female and they briefly talked about the sexist attitude of the times. It only lasted for maybe a few scenes and then it's forgotten. They also talk about class issues with the nobility stuff required to play in the medieval games.

The movie is pretty much a fairy tale movie for teens. It's kind of nice that they added so many innocent moments in this movie. You rarely see wholesome things in movies nowadays. There's too much implied sex and violence in movies nowadays that it did seem pretty interesting when there's such a change of pace.

Watching this movie can remind you of watching a Disney movie. I don't quite remember if the movies back then were like this. Quite frankly, I'm not sure how well a movie like this would do if it was released today. I think it might have been a straight to stream movie.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie but there were a lot of moments that kind of took me out of the movie because of the weird pacing issues. I have to give this movie a 7 out of 10. It was very enjoyable and I think it's made so that a general public can enjoy it.
