Another

Storyline: Twenty-six years ago, in a third-year classroom of a middle school, there was a student named Misaki. As an honors student who was also good at sports, the charming boy was popular with his classmates. When he suddenly died, his classmates decided to carry on as if he was still alive until graduation. Then, in the spring of 1998, a boy named Sakakibara Kouichi transferred to that classroom, and he grew suspicious of the fearful atmosphere in that classroom. In particular, there is a beautiful, aloof girl named Mei Misaki who wears an eye patch and is always alone drawing pictures.

Info: 13 episodes

Genre: Horror, Drama

Rating: TV-MA

My Review: This show was such a trip. I will add a gore warning here, it gets very bloody. Another is very fast-paced and will have you hooked. I watched it in one sitting. I don’t want to spoil anything but this show will make your stomach turn.

The Future Diary (Mirai Nikki)

Storyline: Yukiteru Amano is a 14-year-old loner who spends much of his time dispassionately recording events around him in his cell phone “diary.” His only friends are imaginary ones: Dues ex Machina, the “god of time and space,” and Murmur, Dues’ impish helper. Yukiteru’s life takes a turn for the strange when his diary starts recording events before they happen and Dues announces that he’s not so imaginary after all, and a turn for the sinister when his diary announces his impending death. It turns out Yukiteru has become part of a survival game to determine who will succeed Dues as the god of time and space, competing with 11 others who also possess diaries that predict the future in various ways, But Yukiteru does have at least one strong ally: Yuno Gasai, a classmate who despite being a Future Diary holder herself is determined to protect Yukiteru at all costs. She’s also an obsessive and possibly crazy stalker whose own Future Diary records Yukiteru’s every move in ten-minute intervals.

Info: 26 episodes, 1 OVA episode

Genre: Action, Drama, Thriller

Rating: TV-MA

My Review: This might be one of the craziest stories ever written. I was completely hooked on episode 1. High levels of thrill and plot twists will make your head spin. It is very gory and has some very graphic and disturbing content including sexual assault and abuse, If you cannot handle these topics this show might not be for you. But if you need a thrilling, heart-racing, mind-exploding anime this is for you. You have to watch the OVA episode right after you finish or you will be left with a sour taste in your mouth. I watched this show a while ago and recently rewatched it and can confirm I didn’t see what was coming even though I had already seen it. Let me know if your jaw was on the floor the last 5 episodes.

Erased

Storyline: Struggling manga author Satoru Fujinuma is beset by his fear of expressing himself. However, he has a supernatural ability to be able to prevent deaths and casualties by being sent back in time before an incident occurs, repeating time until it is prevented. One day, he is involved in an incident with his mother. Desperate to prevent the incident, he gets sent back in time only to find himself as a grade-schooler. Satoru brings himself on a new journey; using his ability to prevent the past from changing into a deplorable future.

Info: 12 episodes

Genre: Thriller, Fantasy, Mystery

Rating: TV-14

My Review: Don’t let this cute art style fool you. This show gets insane fast. If you like mystery thrillers, I highly recommend Erased! With the time-traveling element, this show is wild to watch. Not going to lie I did guess the killer pretty early on but that didn’t stop the show from shocking the heck out of me on episode 12. This is a show you will binge so be prepared to watch all 12 episodes in one sitting. If you need a good thrill this Halloween put erased at the top of your list.

Beyond the Boundry (Kyoukai no Kanata)

Storyline: The dark fantasy follows a high school sophomore named Akihito Kanbara. Although the boy appears human, he is half Youmu and invulnerable to wounds because he can heal quickly. One day, Akihito meets freshman Mirai Kuriyama when it seems she is about to jump from the school rooftop. Mirai is isolated because of her ability to manipulate blood, which is considered heresy among members of the spirit world. Disturbing events begin to unfold after Akihito saves Mirai.

Info: 18 episodes, 2 movies

Genre: Thriller, Fantasy, Drama

Rating: TV-PG

My Review: I absolutely loved this show!! It has the right amount of thrill and comedy to break up the horror. I thought this was an extremely creative story, with amazingly written characters. You will sob like a baby at the end just a heads up. This is probably the least scary anime on this list, which is why I added it. I also watched this in one sitting so sit down and get comfy because you will not want to stop watching.

Tokyo Ghoul

Storyline: The suspense horror/dark fantasy story is set in Tokyo, which is haunted by mysterious “ghouls” who are devouring humans. People are gripped by the fear of these ghouls whose identities are masked in mystery. An ordinary college student named Kaneki encounters Rize, a girl who is an avid reader like him, at the café he frequents. Little does he realize that his fate will change overnight.

Info: 4 seasons with 12 episodes each, 2 OVA episodes

Genre: Horror, Fantasy, Drama

Rating: TV-MA

My Review: Okay I have a lot of thoughts on Tokyo Ghoul but I will keep it short. If you read my thoughts on the Dark Gathering you saw only 2 anime that were so disturbing I had to take breaks between episodes. Dark Gathering was on and Tokyo Ghoul was the other. I wouldn't say Tokyo Ghoul is scary but it is disturbing. I didn’t read the manga so I am not sure what I am missing out on as far as content, however, I thought it was a great show up to Tokyo Ghoul: er. I would say just to watch Tokyo Ghoul and end there.

Deadman Wonderland

Storyline: Ganta, the sole survivor of the brutal murder of his entire class, is framed and ends up falsely convicted for it. During the massacre, the real killer embeds a red crystal in him. Ganta is sent to a privately owned prison which has a rather different and perverted take on incarceration, entertaining the masses by performing dangerous games in exchange for privileges. Every inmate he encounters has their own goals, survival being the main one, and it is now up to him to survive this and maybe even prove his innocence.

Info: 13 episodes

Genre: Thriller, Horror, Action

Rating: TV-MA

My Review: If you liked squid games you will love Deadman Wonderland. This is just like squid games expect in prison. Inmates are forced to play games to win money to pay for food and comforts while in prison. The games get more intense and we find out some inmates have the power to control their blood. The games are wild and creative, and then the fights between inmates with abilities are insane to watch. This is a VERY gory anime but so binge-worthy. I am currently reading the manga, Which might ruin the show for me, but we shall see once I’m done.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica

Storyline: One night, 14-year-old Madoka Kaname has a terrible nightmare — against the backdrop of a devastated city, she witnesses a girl fight a losing battle against a dreadful being lingering above, while a cat-like magical creature tells Madoka the only way to change that tragic outcome is for her to make a contract with him and become a magical girl. The next day, the teen’s dream seemingly becomes reality as the girl she saw in her dream — Homura — arrives at Mitakihara Middle School as a transfer student, mysteriously warning Madoka to stay just the way she is. But when later on she and her best friend Sayaka encounter the same cat-like magical creature from her dream — who introduces himself as Kyubey — the pair discovers that magical girls are real, and what’s more, they can choose to become one. All they must do is sign a contract with Kyubey and agree to take on the duty to fight abstract beings called ‘witches’ that spread despair to the human world, and in return, each one of them will be granted any single wish they desire. However, as Homura’s omen suggests, there might be far more to becoming a magical girl than Madoka and Sayaka realize.

My Review: What… the… F**k….

I could honestly leave that as the full review but I will give you a little more. That is all you will say the whole show. This is on a horror list so you have some idea it is scary. I had no idea. My sister told me this was a fun magical girl anime and I had to watch it with her. I said What the F**k the whole show. This show will blow your brains out and then stab you in the heart and then have your stomach implode. I cannot think of a better way to describe this show.

Sankarea: Undying love

Storyline: Furuya has a fascination for zombies and collects trinkets watches any movie and plays any game with them in it. When his cat dies however this hobby becomes somewhat of an obsession as he tries to revive his pet using an old manuscript. Rea, a girl who is popular and seems to have it all, is not as happy with her life as it would seem. Her wish is to be reborn another person and she might just get her wish after crossing paths with Furuya.

Info: 15 episodes

Genre: Horror, Romance

Rating: TV-MA

My Review: Horror mixed with romance? What could go wrong? I wanted to add this anime to the list for my romance lovers out there. This is a horror anime but it isn’t scary. It is gory because of the zombie component, however, it is mostly romance. I watched this anime in one sitting. Very creative storyline, and great characters, and is worth a watch.

Japanese Tales of Macabre

Storyline: Master of horror Manga, Junji Ito, gives us 20 tales of terror. (Technically 21.) The beautifully illustrated series delves into the darkness of the human mind and brings its worst fears to light. Myths, legends, ghosts, demons, or just a broken mind twisted by tragedy, every episode shows a different horror you didn’t know you should be scared of.

Info: 12 episodes

Genre: Horror, Supernatural, Drama

Rating: TV-MA

My Review: They break each episode into 2 short scary stories. Some are way more disturbing than others, so this anime to me is either a hit or miss. However, if you have 10 minutes and want a quick scare watch half an episode. Be prepared to be left unsettled as each of the stories leaves you feeling uneasy, without any resolution. The more horrific episode to me was episode 8 Layers of Fear. I’d be curious to hear which one scares you the most.

Soul Eater

Storyline: Set in the Shinigami Technical School for weapon meisters, the series revolves around 3 duos. These pairs are a partnership between a weapon meister and a human weapon. Trying to reach a ranking of “Death Scythe” (and thus fit for use by the Shinigami) they must collect the souls of 99 evil humans and 1 witch. However, forces outside of the Academy make it a more challenging feat causing trouble around the world.

Info: 51 episodes

Genre: Fantasy, Action

Rating: TV-14

My Review: I love this anime to pieces. It was one of the very first I ever watched so there might be some nostalgia attached to it. But I did recently rewatch it and I have to say, I was blown away again. In the beginning episodes, you will be somewhat annoyed by the characters, the epically black star takes some getting used to. Once you get hooked on the story and the character development you will be hooked for life. I think that anyone who watches this show will be blown away by the creativity and thrilling storyline. This is over 10 years old so you have to give the animation a little slack but I still think it holds its own. It is very different from the other horror anime on this list but whenever I think of Halloween I think of Soul Eater so it had to get its rightful place on the Halloween list. Highly recommend it if you haven’t seen it yet!

Terrified yet? I told you it was going to be a lot of horror for this anime list. I had a lot of fun writing this week of horror and this list, however after watching a month of horror I am ready for some happy anime.

BONUS ANIME!!

Ghost Stories English Dub

Watched too much horror and need something fun to watch. I recommend putting on Ghost Stories English Dub. But isn’t this another scary anime? It was intended to be a scary anime, However, when it made it to the dubbing the cast had complete free range. They were unsupervised and started to do ridiculous dubbing to see what they could get away with. This caused one of the funniest anime I have ever seen. This anime is one of the most unhinged things you will ever see and I always put it on when I need a good laugh. Just make sure to watch the English dub version.

I’d love to hear your favorite horror anime and if you are going to watch one of the ones I listed in the comments below.

Have a fun and safe Halloween!!
