Movie Review- Thor: Love and Thunder

Taiki Watiti's comical spin on the classic superhero genre

By Alanna BaronePublished 4 years ago 3 min read

I went into Thor: Love and Thunder expecting a fun, lighthearted addition to the MCU with the classic Taika Watiti twist and, that's exactly what I got. Taika's silly style of storytelling and quirky comedy is extremely entertaining and left me laughing even after the movie was over.

After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Thor enters a journey for inner peace. But, his retirement gets cut short when he has a run-in with Gorr the God Butcher, a manic killer armed with the necrosword who seeks the death of all Gods

The most popular critic I have seen on this movie is it's "too silly". I on the other hand disagree, this movie doesn't take itself seriously and was fun for my whole family and had jokes I still laugh about now. This is a Taika Watiti comedy movie to it's core and I love it.

This movie takes the comedy from Thor: Ragnarok and turns it up 100. I'm a huge fan of the previous movie so you could only imagine my reaction to the constant silly one-liners and banter between characters. Thor's goats left my theatre roaring in laughter every time they opened their mouth. .

Chris Hemsworth once again proves he was made for the role of Thor. I can't imagine anyone else bringing as much charisma and energy to the role as he did.

His on-screen chemistry with Natalie Portman as Jane Foster is so strong and compelling, making them one of my new favourite Marvel Couples. Personally, I think their relationship is portrayed best in this film. The flashback of their time spent together added some much needed information about what happened between then after Thor: the Dark World.

Natalie Portman reprised her role as Jane Foster, now known as Mighty Thor with the ability to wield a fractured Mjolnir. She brings depth and a variety of emotions to her character, especially in the scenes revolving around her stage four cancer. Her backstory was comic book accurate and was impressive to see it translated onto the big screen

Christian Bale was perfectly cast as Gorr the God Butcher and was one of the highlights of this movie. His performance is both chilling and unsettling to watch. He brings great contrast to the fun tone of the movie. His backstory was so tragic and well-written. It left me feeling both empathetic and deeply disturbed. I only wish he received more screen time, especially scenes of him interacting with the Gods.

The addition of the Guardians was great but, I hoped and expected to see them more throughout the film. They were heavily advertised in the trailers and made to seem like they had a larger, more important role.

Tessa Thompson played Valkyrie like an absolute badass. Valkyrie has shown so many leadership qualities in every movie she has been in. I loved watching her embrace the role of King of New Asgard.

-SPOILER ALERT FOR POST-CREDIT SCENES-

Personally, i enjoyed both end-credit scenes. The first scene adds Hercules to the MCU's roster of newly added characters. It sets up an exiting future for Marvel and leaves me wondering what is to come for the Gods. The second scene is so heart-felt, making me question what's next for Jane Foster as Mighty Thor. Jane arrives in Valhalla, a place for Asgardians who were bravely slain in battle. There she was welcomed with open arms by Idris Elba reprising his role as Heimdall. I was so upset he was killed off in Infinity War. His return was a pleasant shock for both me and everyone else in the theatre.
