KPop Demon Hunters

Review

Okay so I’ve been hearing about nothing but KPop Demon Hunters since it came out. The kids I teach loved it, my cousin loved it, my roommate loved it. So I knew that it would at the very least get some popularity nominations so I knew I had to watch it.

Oh this is so cute, the very premise of this is adorable. Three women are charged with the protection of the world and they do so by forging community through music. If that’s not just the cutest thing in the whole world I don’t know what is.

Also demons coming up with the takedown of the hunters and the plan being forming a boy band is hilarious and accurate.

So I understand Rumi on a deep personal level. She doesn’t understand how vacation works. They finally get a break and this girl throws them right into working again, and then we have the fact that Rumi’s voice is not super healthy. No sane person throws themselves into work when they aren’t feeling 100%...cough cough.

See you aren’t just distracting the fans with a boyband, but also distracting the girl group. I’m so glad this movie did not come out when I was 14, I would have been fucking insufferable. I too would have been distracted by a hot man with swoopy hair (he kinda looks like my husband so hehe).

I love how integrated the music is. The story allows for the music to permeate the narrative and aid it which is such a nice way to watch a musical. Musicals always use music to move the narrative but that’s not even what’s happening. This movie uses music as a background to whatever is happening but it's also fueling what’s happening. I love it.

The dub on this is pretty good, you barely notice a difference and that’s great because some anime’s have truly awful dubs.

I love the act 2 climax because we have seen all movie how much Rumi struggles with who she is. And she’s never really had to fight the demon part of her just hide it and now she has to actually fight it or embrace it.

I am going to be a tad irritated if this movie doesn’t get a single nomination for best original song. There wasn’t a single movie this year that used music the way this film does, and there wasn’t a single film that seeped into people’s daily lives the way this one did.

Oh I think I’m gonna cry. Rumi walking through this stadium singing her song while her friends join her is so beautiful. I will go sob in a corner now.

Really this is a film about sisterhood and friendship and I love that. So few films actually write female friendships well and this one has it nailed. Them being honest with each other and opening up with each other is what ends up saving the world and I love it so much. Hey guys this is easily one of the best movies of the year. I'm so happy right now.

Overall I loved it. I think all of the technical elements were done really well. The story was clear and paced out well. The music was super catchy and perfectly integrated into the film. And I just had a good time watching it. They got me invested really quickly and it never let me go. I think very few films are perfect films so I will give it an 8/10 and it is an absolute must watch if you haven’t seen it yet.
