Matlock? NO, Matlock!
A new take on an old show...

Have you seen Matlock yet? No, not that Matlock!
That’s right, there’s a fresh 2024 version of Matlock coming your way. If you were hoping to see Andy Griffith reprise his role as Ben Matlock from the original 1986 series, you might want to adjust your expectations because that was a while ago. In early January 2024, it was revealed that a remake of Matlock is set to start production in October 2024. The show is being developed by Jennie Snyder Urman, who has worked on some amazing series like Gilmore Girls, 90210, Emily Owens, M.D., Jane the Virgin, Reign, and Charmed. Not only has she penned the first episode of Matlock, but she’s also taking on the role of executive producer for CBS Studios.
As of now, Matlock is on its third episode in the U.S. and had a sneak peek on September 22, 2024, ahead of its official premiere on October 17, drawing in 7.7 million viewers. In just five years, the Matlock pilot achieved the highest ratings for a non-Super Bowl premiere and even scored a rare 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It also was renewed after the second aired episode which is nothing short of remarkable for a new television show. So with all that, how could you possibly not tune in?
The show stars Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock a 75 year old who rejoins the workforce at a prestigious law firm where she uses her cleverness tactics to win cases. Oh and she's not just clever, she's downright manipulative! Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), an attorney with a thirst for justice. Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter – and yes he looks just like his dad, John!), the son of the head of the firm, is intrigued by Matty and her skills. Matty works alongside the firm’s younger associates – Billy (David Del Rio) and Sarah (Leah Lewis). The first episode shows Matty using her cunning to break into a law firm's partner meeting to attempt to secure a job. (See below)
I won't reveal to you the big plot twist of this series because I want you to jump out of your seat and say “NO WAY!” just like I did. So no peeking before you watch the episode!! The show can be seen on CBS, Paramount+ or alternatively on Prime Video or for you clever types who can't afford cable or paid subscriptions you could try viewing it on MoviesJoy with an ad-blocker turned on.
I've never been a huge fan of Kathy Bates probably because Misery scared the beejeezus outta me but her performance in Matlock is amazing and the shows plot is something I am very much looking forward to getting into!!
Anyone can watch the original Matlock for free on Pluto TV. Remember they'll be advertisements on Pluto so you can also stream it on Frndly TV as well as on several cable channels, including Hallmark Mystery and Justice Central.
Matlock 2024 airs on Thursdays at 9 PM ET on CBS and the next day on Paramount+. Just in time to switch over afterwards to Grey's Anatomy on ABC! ;)
Speaking of Grey's Anatomy (Shhh I hear you all groaning!) This is a perfect show to lead into switching your channel to ABC and tuning into my dear wonderful Meredith Grey, my spirit animal.. But before then be sure to read the below article about Strong women in Television because this is a shameless plug and I said so! :P

I haven't got a chance to watch this but I like both those actors so I the reboot should be good.
Generally, I'm not a big fan of Reboots. Don't get me started on the New Magnum a few years ago, The Charlie's Angels Reboot died a quick death, as it should have. Not to mention a host of others that have come and gone. But this one is a keeper. They did the smart thing by honoring the original show and acknowledging that it existed. I haven't watched any of the Griffith Matlocks in ages. SO I don't remember a lot about it. But it seems to me that Andy Griffith played the character similar to Kathy Bates, in that they used their ages and appearance as a distractrion to get people to let their guard down and talk. I don't think Andy's version of it was ever so blatantly manipulative as she does. But the substory that underlines most of the episodes gives her a reason to do what she doses. So there is a much more serious bent to the series than It had the first time around. As long as they don't let the Meladramnitic substory take over the whole thing it should be good.
Hey, Sam, was just watching Matlock reruns with any Griffith! Would like to catch this for sure and have it bookmarked. Kathy Bates will be a fine watch.
I have to say I hadn’t looked at any previews for this just because my gut reaction to seeing the name Matlock over the face of Kathy Bates, as much as I love her, was just… No! But, I guess I’ll have to swallow that and give it a shot. Thanks Sam for the write up.
Sorry for the sloppy writing. The story got kicked back for only being 495 words so I had to add some silly fluff into it.. LOL! 🤣🤣
