Longlegs

Review

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Okay…I want to clarify right at the top here that we are only watching this movie for journalism purposes. I really can’t stand Nicholas Cage movies, he seems to be getting harder to avoid though. He’s been in 3 movies in 2 years and it is a lot. I think he was uniquely suited for Dream Scenario and Renfield but his face still bothers me. So here we are with my against my will review of Longlegs.

There has seemingly been a rise in horror films this year and I am not sure what sparked the uptick but as a huge horror movie fan I am here for it. I would be more excited if these horror films were better but it is what it is.

The aspect ration at the beginning is inherently creepy as is the cinematography as a whole. The lighting is very subdued, they use a lot of distorted camera angles used to convey fear.

We jump right into the action I suppose, with very little to no context given at the beginning of the film. The FBI is trying to track down a suspect they have deemed “Longlegs” who is responsible for the murders of full families over the course of a decade.

We are focused on Lee, a female FBI agent who seems to have some sort of otherworldly ability to find things and people. She receives a card from Longlegs and immediately starts investigating.

The film is broken into parts with some random ass title cards. I really can’t stand when films tell the audience that it's “part one” or “part two”, like why do I need to know how you structured your film? 90% of the time (like now) it serves no narrative purpose. There is no reason for us to see part title cards.

This whole movie gives me Infinity Pool vibes and I mean that in the most insulting way possible. Infinity Pool was the worst movie of 2024 and this film feels remarkably similar. Like they are just going for the creep factor and nothing else. I will admit that this definitely has more of a plot. But the acting seems very monotone and that's not really enhancing the story at all. It is a very specific directorial decision that is distinct to Yorgos Lanthimos and Wes Anderson movies but this is really just not doing it for me.

Mom is super creepy and a little unhinged. This woman needs some serious mental help. Apparently Lee has been a target of Longlegs for a while.

The makeup team did a great job, this is the creepiest Nicholas Cage has ever been. He looks like a bloated corpse.

Her mother was this creeps accomplice? The dolls were the source of the murder sprees, I don’t know it just seems a little lazy. The devil and magic being the answer when there were no real supernatural elements to the narrative that we got to see is just kind of out of left field.

The film was definitely creepy, the plot was a little aimless but the way that they delivered exposition was done pretty well. It still seemed a little bit underdeveloped. Like there was something missing from the story. The ending was kind of a twist ending but it didn’t feel right. The best thing this film has going for it is the cinematography, the interesting camera angles and the distorted shots kept the film interesting to watch. Overall the film is a 6/10 at best. I know I am super judgy but it really just wasn’t that good, so sorry.
