Justice For Hagrid

Why he's more awesome than you remember!

By Chloe GilholyPublished 5 years ago 3 min read

After writing my article, Cho Chang deserves better. It made me think of somebody else that I think deserves more love. He's one of the few characters to be in every single Harry Potter movie and book. He's been there for Harry since the very beginning. I am talking about nobody else but Hagrid.

In my opinion, he is one of the most underrated characters in the series. JK Rowling has created some fantastic characters, and many don't get the recognition they deserve. Hagrid is one of those folks who is once seen, never forgotten. People don't give Hagrid enough credit. So, I've made a list of why I think Hagrid is a great character.

He's a well-rounded character.

I don't mean his body mass. He's more than just a mad and hairy half-giant. He sure has his flaws. It wasn't the most brilliant idea to keep a fire-breathing dragon as a pet in a tiny little cottage. He trusts people too quickly and leaks secrets. But he's also trustworthy and easy to chat to. What makes him extraordinary is flaws are balanced by his good heart. In the books, he has a distinctive voice. He feels like somebody you know from the pub. I think we all know somebody in our lives who is a lot like Hagrid.

He stands up for people and is trustworthy.

When the golden trio was quick to blame Snape, Hagrid stood up for him. Hagrid insisted that Snape was one of the teachers protecting the stone. When Hermione and Ron were convinced that Snape had put a curse on Harry's broom, Hagrid was quick to say it was nonscience. Hagrid turned out to be correct.

Hagrid and Dumbledore are great friends. Dumbledore even said that he trusted him all his life, even when others doubted him. If anybody bashed Dumbledore, you would have Hagrid to fight for. And he also didn't take any shit from the Dursleys when they tried to stop Harry from going to Hogwarts.

He loves animals.

Hagrid is a fan of all creatures, great and small. He's had a handful of animals in his care. His dog, Fang, is nowhere near as brutal as he looks. A lot of other pets he owned were dangerous, which caused some problems. Despite the difficulties, he always believed in them. When his spider, Aragog, was framed by Tom Riddle, his insistence on the spider's innocence says a lot about this character. Despite Fluffy's cute name, the three-headed-dog can be ferocious. Maybe Fang and Fluffy should have their names swapped.

He was Harry's first proper friend.

Hagrid was the one that helped Harry escape from his abusive home. He was the gatekeeper to the world of Hogwarts. Without Hagrid, Harry would have been lost. Even though a lot of what Hagrid was doing was work, he did it out of sincerity. One of my favourite scenes in Deathly Hallows is where he’s carrying Harry’s corpse onto the school grounds. You can see the grief in his streaming eyes and the loss of hope he’s feeling. Robbie Coltrane was a perfect casting choice for Hagrid.

He deserves happiness

I found a post that said that Hagrid never married. So many assume his relationship with Olympe Maxime faded, but they remained friends. But you don't have to be married, to show that you love each other. I hope it's the case that Maxime and Hagrid are still together but just didn't get married. I don't ship the two because they're both half-giants and they've both faced discrimination over it. Their relationship isn't heavily covered on, but it's a nice touch. The romantic connection to them felt sincere and real. It's crazy how so many of the Hogwarts students end up marrying other students. In a realistic world, how many people do you know actually married somebody they met at school?
