Jurassic World Rebirth Trailer: A Promising Start or a Step Backward?
"Jurassic World Rebirth Promises Stunning Visuals, But Does It Play It Too Safe?"

The Jurassic World franchise is making a comeback with its latest installment, Jurassic World Rebirth, set to hit theaters in the summer of 2025. This marks the seventh film in the Jurassic Park series and the first entry in a new era following Jurassic World Dominion. Directed by Gareth Edwards and featuring a fresh cast including Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, the film has already sparked excitement and debate.
However, while the first trailer showcases impressive visuals and action-packed sequences, it also raises some questions. The biggest concern? The franchise seems to be retreating to familiar territory instead of fully embracing the "dinosaurs in the real world" concept that previous films set up.
A New Beginning with a New Team
Universal Pictures wasted no time in rebooting the Jurassic franchise after wrapping up the Jurassic World trilogy. While Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard are no longer part of the series, the studio has assembled a strong team for this next chapter. Gareth Edwards, known for his work on Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is directing. His ability to create a sense of scale in visual effects-heavy films makes him an exciting choice for Rebirth.
Additionally, original Jurassic Park screenwriter David Koepp is returning to the franchise. This could mean a more grounded approach to storytelling, something fans of the original Jurassic Park might appreciate.
A Visually Stunning Trailer
The trailer for Jurassic World Rebirth proves one thing: Gareth Edwards knows how to make dinosaurs look amazing. The CGI, lighting, and proportions of the creatures already seem superior to many recent blockbuster films. Considering Edwards was only brought onto the project in February 2024 and production started just a few months later, the level of quality on display is impressive.
However, while the visuals are stunning, the trailer doesn’t reveal much about the new cast of characters. Their roles in the story remain unclear, leaving fans to wonder if they will be as compelling as past protagonists.
Back to the Island—Again?
One of the most puzzling aspects of Rebirth is its setting. According to the trailer, the movie takes place on another island filled with dinosaurs. This isn’t Isla Nublar or Isla Sorna but rather a new, secret location described as "the research facility for the original Jurassic Park."
This decision feels like a step backward. The Jurassic World trilogy, especially Fallen Kingdom, spent a lot of time setting up the idea that dinosaurs had spread across the globe. The ending of Fallen Kingdom showed dinosaurs escaping into the wild, and Dominion hinted at a world struggling to coexist with these prehistoric creatures. But now, Rebirth seems to undo that idea by pushing the dinosaurs back into an isolated environment.
According to the official synopsis from Universal, "Five years after the events of Jurassic World Dominion, the planet’s ecology has proven largely inhospitable to dinosaurs. Those remaining exist in isolated equatorial environments with climates resembling the one in which they once thrived."
While this explanation makes some sense, it feels like an unnecessary course correction. Why build up the idea of dinosaurs roaming free across the world only to walk it back?
Ignoring the Best Ideas from Previous Films
One of the most thrilling sequences in Jurassic World Dominion was the Malta chase scene, where dinosaurs ran through city streets, causing chaos. This moment showed the franchise moving in an exciting new direction. If dinosaurs could exist in urban environments, imagine the storytelling possibilities—dinosaurs in major cities, adapting to new climates, and humanity struggling to deal with them.
Instead, Rebirth returns to the safety of an island, similar to past films. While an island setting can still provide intense action and suspense, it feels like a missed opportunity. The franchise had the chance to explore fresh, creative ideas but seems hesitant to do so.
A Safe Bet for a Profitable Franchise
Despite these concerns, there’s no doubt that Jurassic World Rebirth will be a massive box office success. The Jurassic franchise has been one of the most consistently profitable in Hollywood. People love dinosaurs, and as long as the action delivers, audiences will show up.
That said, it would be exciting to see the franchise take more risks. Rebirth has the potential to be a thrilling return to form, especially with Gareth Edwards at the helm. But if the movie simply repeats old storylines, it could struggle to stand out from its predecessors.
Final Thoughts
The Jurassic World Rebirth trailer has given fans plenty to discuss. The visuals are stunning, and the new creative team brings hope for a fresh take on the franchise. However, the decision to return to an island setting instead of fully exploring a world where dinosaurs roam free raises concerns.
Will Rebirth be the exciting new chapter the franchise needs, or will it play it too safe? Only time will tell. Until then, fans will have to wait and see if this latest Jurassic adventure truly delivers on its promise.
