Jupiter’s Legacy: Requiem #3

Image Comics 2021

Written by Mark Millar

Illustrated by Tommy Lee Edwards

Lettered by John Workman

Chloe Sampson is finally wearing the Lady Liberty uniform, inheriting the legacy from her late mother. But she's been married four times, and her private life is still as complicated as it ever was. Divorced from Hutch, she's journeyed into space to answer a distress call and finds another world where the aliens have created another team of heroes with an origin eerily similar to their own.

Regardless of what anyone says this still remains one of today’s most interesting series. How we saw the team created, how their kids played such an important role in the book and now here we are later on and those kids have kids of their own and their world hasn’t slowed down or stopped. It is exciting, fresh and original in so many ways. This is one of the few times I don’t mind the massive jump into the future, because Mark always has that opportunity to sneak an arc in to flesh out more of those missing years. In the meantime I’m more than content to sit back, relax and watch this superhero soap opera continue to unfold before my eyes.

I absolutely love the way that this is being told. The story & plot development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is impeccably rendered. The character development that we see through the dialogue, the character development as well as how they act and react to the situations and circumstances they encounter. This of course continues to bring us their personalities and keeps them fresh in our minds. The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages revealing more and more of the story keeps the reader charged up and ready for more.

I greatly appreciate the way that we see this being structured and how the layers within the story continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen. I love the layers within this particular story because honestly there’s so much going on and none of it is cluttered or clashing with each other. It has this amazing flow and how they manage to bring this depth, dimension and complexity to the story is amazing. How we see everything working together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is beautifully rendered.

The interiors here are tuterly phenomenal. The linework we see is fantastic and how the varying weights and techniques are being utilised to create this level & quality of detail work that we see throughout the book is mindbogglingly brilliant to see. The sheer sumptuousness of the work brings this to such a level that is crazy to witness. The way that we see backgrounds being utilised to expand and enhance the moments as well as how they work within the composition of the panels to bring out the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story is remarkably great. The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling. The colour work is equally as brilliant to see and that Tommy does everything it looks precisely what he intends it to be and that’s marvellous. The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows such an innate understanding of how colour actually works and it’s glorious.

This is exactly what I needed for this week. Mark is a master when it comes to balancing heavy story with action/adventure and that kind of dark humour that feels incredibly natural in this world. With some masterful writing and intelligent characterisation that’s brought to life by these absolutely brilliant interiors brightens up my entire day.
