Judy Garland: A Star Gone Too Soon

Someone Loved By So Many But Many People Didn't Know About Her

By Katherine M.Published 6 years ago 3 min read

Judy Garland was one of the most famous actresses and singers in her days. Her voice had touched so many hearts and so many of fans would wait in line for hours just to see her sing in a concert and have seen all of her movies. Although she had struggle with drugs throughout her life. She happened to be by far one of the best singers to be out in history.

Judy is best known for her role as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz! There that movie had marked the real beginning of her stardom and throughout the rest of her life, everyone will know who she is. But despite having gotten so famous and known for everything that she has done, life hadn’t been quite that good for her.

When Judy was a child, being born Frances Ethel Gumm, named after both of her parents on June 10, 1922. Her mother Ethel tried what she could to make sure that her children would be known and when she found out that Judy was the one with all the talent, Ethel did was she could to get Judy known more than ever. Then once Judy was signed by MGM in 1935, then she really felt the pressure from both the studio and her mother.

What had gotten Judy started on drug, especially pills was the fact that MGM and her mom started giving her pills at a young age. MGM used to give her pills to make sure that she didn’t gain any weight. Just was small at that time at only 4’11" and they were afraid of letting her eat anything because if she did, then she would start to look heavy. So the studio gave her the pills and watched what Judy would eat so she wouldn’t gain any weight. Also, to make sure that she was up and full of energy to do a movie. The studio started giving her amphetamines so that way she she performed, she performed at her best. But the only problem with that was the fact that they would keep Judy awake all the time and she would struggle to sleep at night. So her mother Ethel started giving Judy sleeping pills to help her sleep. Thus making Just to start relying on pills all the time whenever she was feeling stressed.

Judy had gone on to do more films and even got married a few times in her life and had three children. Her daughter Liza from her second husband Vincente Minnelli and her daughter and son Lorna and Joseph from her third husband Sidney Luft. She loved her children so much and did what she could do for them. They meant everything to her.

After so many years of abusing barbiturates, Judy Garland died June 22, 1969, just 12 days after her 47th birthday.

Something like this is sad because she was so young and didn’t full get to enjoy growing old and being able to see her grandchildren and watch them grow up themselves. It is sad because Judy was going through so much and no one really got to know that much about what has happened in her life. All people really knew about her was the fact that she could sing, she did movies and from time to time, she was having a drug issue. Other than that, no one really knew about what Judy had gone through as she was going on and all the other stuff happening in her life. Judy Garland was talented and beautiful and only the true people who had loved and learned about her over the years really know about what has happened in her life.

I began to love and learn more about Judy after watching a documentary about her and I’ve been wondering more and more about her. And I know that there is a lot more to learn about her and I am willing to learn all that I need and see some things that is out there about her one day.

Judy Garland was truly a star that was gone too soon and even though there are many other amazing talented singers out there in the pop culture today. Maybe there could be another Judy Garland out there to go out and capture our hearts the way Judy did.
