Invented Marvel Characters: Contra

Bringing my original comic characters to life with iPhone apps and zero artistic ability

By CKPublished 7 months ago 3 min read

Growing up my dream job was to be a comic book artist/writer. But with very little artistic talent that dream died pretty quickly. Now I do my best to bring my characters to life using apps like swordmaker, armormaker, you doodle and cut me in. They don't always turn out looking very good but I get more excited about the concepts and stories behind the characters than how well I can make the character look good. Sometimes my characters are from cultures I am not a part of because I think it fits their story or other aspects about them. I am not a cultural expert but at the very least I hope no one is upset by me using aspects of cultures I'm not a part of and find interesting. That said below is my Marvel inspired character Contra.

Another Super Soldier attempt, Contra was created in Brazil by Hydra scientists who escaped from Germany as the Nazis/Hydra were being defeated. Decades later Contra emerged attacking Captain America when Hydra regained some of its former strength. His powers include super strength and athleticism as well as incredibly keen senses making him an exceptional tracker. His primary weapon consists of two large grey claw like structures extending from the back of his right wrist. These claws look serrated on the side facing the back of Contra's hand and can be used to somewhat stab and cut enemies but they are thick, dull and over-sized compared to the claws of someone like Wolverine. This is because their main function is to launch bladed discs at high velocities. Inspired by the sport of jai alai Contra launches what look like circular saw blades between two gears with astonishing trajectories. Once a blade is "loaded" by being placed in between the claws commando swings his arm to fire the blade. When aimed well the blades can be lethal even to meta humans for 3 reasons. First Contra's Captain America level strength propels his arm quickly. Second the length of the claw accelerates the blade even faster. Third, the gears on the blade make them spin at high speeds as they catch along the part of the claws that look serrated. When enemies get close Contra can use capoeira inspired combat while striking with the claw.

Contra wears green tactical armour with black accents on his body and a green fabric mask with black eye-lenses. The entire uniform functional and simple aside from a black headband tied behind his head with long flowing tails and a Brazil flag on the front. After Captain America defeated him physically and exposed hydras evil nature Contra became mostly a hero, although other heroes often take issue with his willingness to kill. His first betrayal of Hydra was when he was tasked with tracking Bruce Banner who was in Brazil fleeing the American government. Fearing what Hydra scientists may develop using the knowledge of Bruce Banner, Contra led a group of elite Hydra soldiers to their deaths by luring them into a cave and ambushing them. This led to many conflicts with Baron Zemo and his forces. While still in Brazil he has defended mutant civilians from from hate groups and has clashed with or collaborated with Kraven the hunter on a few occasions based on who or what Kraven's target at the given times were. When investigating Hydra activities in the states he stations himself in San Francisco. In one of his stays there he mistook Venom for a threat to the city and tried to put him down, resulting in him nearly being killed. Once incapacitated by Venom they realized they both sought to protect the city and have worked together at times.
