'Grey's Anatomy': The 6 Most Unhinged Things Dr. Owen Hunt Has Done

A lot has gone on in the 'Grey's Anatomy' universe and some of the most worst imaginable things have had Owen involved

After 20 seasons of Grey's Anatomy on ABC, viewers have had their fair share of situations and characters that were... less than ideal. One of these less than ideal situations was when the show introduced US Army trauma surgeon, Dr. Owen Hunt.

Owen has been a controversial figure pretty much since his introduction for many reasons, specifically for his representation of PTSD. While I can see what show creator Shonda Rhimes probably wanted to do with Owen, she was unsuccessful as he's ultimately done nothing but gaslight women, traumatize interns and residents, and literally break the law. Along with that, he has continued to display complete recklessness in his personal life and in the operating rooms - including arguing with other surgeons over more invasive "quick fix" operations because that's what he did in Iraq.

Amidst it all, there are some standouts from the many of things Dr. Owen Hunt has done during his time on Grey's Anatomy. Let's talk about the top 6 most unhinged things Owen has done on the show.

**Spoiler Warning**

This article features spoilers through season 20 of Grey's Anatomy

6. Adding fuel to the fire that destroyed Jackson and April's marriage

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

There is no denying that Jackson and April were rocky from the beginning, but a lot of Grey's fans believe that they could have made it - especially given the fact that they ultimately got back together before Jackson moved to Boston. However, they took a pretty long and windy sidetrack to that apparent happily ever after and the blame lies with Owen.

Without the completely thoughtless encouragement from Owen, April likely wouldn't have gone with him to the Middle East as a US Army trauma surgeon. April's departure after the death of her and Jackson's son ultimately led to Jackson feeling abandoned by his wife. It also didn't help April much in the end as her crisis of faith continued both from her personal trauma and now the trauma of war. The couple divorced despite April becoming pregnant again, and it probably wouldn't have happened without Owen's big mouth convincing her to go overseas.

5. Doing literally everything he did to Teddy

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

Putting aside all of the things that Teddy has done, Owen has continued to do this woman dirty for well over a decade. The two met when they were Army trauma surgeons in Iraq and skimming over the fact that Owen never told Teddy how he felt, he proceeded to allow his emotional attachment to her get in the way of every single one of his relationships. Not only that, he had the gall to get jealous when Teddy fell in love with another man and tried to make her moving to Germany for a job all about him.

While we're on the subject of Germany, remember when Owen flew to Germany and professed his love for Teddy? You know, when he impregnated her not even a full day after sleeping with Amelia? And then he tried to again make it all about him when Teddy showed up pregnant in Seattle months later. When the two (finally) became a couple, he followed the same patterns he had with his previous wives and became aggressive, controlling, and angry whenever things didn't go his way. Oh, we can't forget that he adopted an entire child with Amelia and then had Teddy take over mommy duties when she showed up pregnant with his child - a child he'd tried to force two women to have already.

4. Being ultimately responsible for killing Mark and Lexie

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

There isn't much else to say except that Owen is 100% responsible for the famous Grey's Anatomy plane crash that killed Mark and Lexie. As Chief of Surgery, he made the call to skimp on the charter plane and that cheap charter is what cost the lives of two surgeons and took Arizona's leg. Without his oversight, they would still be alive and Arizona would have her leg.

3. Igniting the flame that destroyed Arizona and Callie's marriage

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

Speaking of Arizona's leg, that plane crash - that Owen was completely at fault for - is what ignited the spark that burned down her and Callie's marriage. The couple got past their struggle over whether or not to have a child, they worked through co-parenting with Mark, and they got past Callie not wanting to follow Arizona to Africa. That is until Arizona lost her leg after the plane crash.

After the crash, Arizona and Callie were on a deep spiral down and they never could seem to get their heads above water. Ultimately they divorced after Arizona cheated on Callie and they went through a pretty nasty custody battle. Callie's exit from the show came when she moved to New York with her new partner, Penny. Arizona also exited the show when she also moved to New York to be closer to their daughter, Sofia, and open a women's health center with her previous mentor, Dr. Nicole Herman.

Thanks a lot, Owen.

2. Stopping at nothing to try and force women to have his baby

Prior to Teddy, Owen was married to both Dr. Cristina Yang and Dr. Amelia Shepherd. Aside from making it clear that he wanted to control his wives in all ways possible, he made it known that his ultimate goal was fatherhood.

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

His first marriage to Cristina came with a barrage of issues including domestic violence (we didn't forget you strangling her), emotional manipulation, infidelity, and trauma bonding. Aside from all of that, Owen couldn't quite handle the decision Cristina had made to not have children. This came to a breaking point when he failed to control her unplanned pregnancy and she had an abortion. He let everyone know how he really felt when he announced that Cristina had "killed their baby" in front of all their colleagues and continued to try and convince her to be a mother to his child. Needless to say, Cristina finally had enough and divorced him.

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

This theme continues with his brief marriage to Amelia after Derek's death. In addition to his classic emotional manipulation and trauma bonding, they have a pregnancy scare which leads Amelia to tell him she doesn't want children. Owen even tried to gaslight her into thinking the only reason she didn't want his child was because of her brain tumor - which wasn't true. The main difference with this relationship is Amelia did what Owen tried to convince Cristina to do and she compromised. She stayed involved with him even after their divorce and the two fostered a drug-addicted teen and her infant son, Leo. In the end, Amelia backed out of Leo's adoption last minute after realizing she didn't want to be with Owen, which good for her.

1. Being Grey Sloan's unofficial "Doctor Death"

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

This is easily the most unhinged thing Dr. Owen Hunt has ever done. After encountering a dying veteran, Owen gets involved with veterans support groups and the Department of Veterans Affairs to try and expand medical coverage to victims of burn pits and toxic exposures. At the time of the show, the real-life PACT Act was in the works so the timing was a perfect snapshot of the state of veteran healthcare in the United States. However, the show took a drastic turn when it was revealed that Owen not only provided this veteran with the means to achieve physician-assisted suicide, but he gave his information to other veterans illegally seeking to do the same.

We learn this when a medical transport vehicle carrying him, Teddy, and Dr. Hayes crashes. After Teddy goes for help, he confesses what he has done to Dr. Hayes - who then turns around and outright leaves the United States altogether because he didn't want to be responsible for ending Owen's medical career.

'Grey's Anatomy' (ABC)

Owen (kind of) pays for this action after the secret comes out. A disgruntled veteran spouse that Owen promised to help shows up at Grey Sloan and when Teddy forces Owen to deny physician-assisted suicide, the spouse notifies Dr. Bailey of what is going on. Owen and Teddy flee Seattle to try and avoid charges, but in the end he had his medical license suspended and avoided jail time. He also was allowed to continue working at Grey Sloan under supervision due to the post-COVID physician shortage.

Honorable Mention: That time he used live pigs to simulate trauma cases

I know you all remember when he was hired at the hospital, back when it was still Seattle Grace, and he did a trauma crash course with the residents - a crash course that led to them operating on live pigs under anesthesia. Oh, I forgot to mention that he stabbed the pigs first and "forced" the residents to try and save their lives. That was red flag #1 and it all just went downhill from there.
