If This Then That

If Inception is a dream within a dream movie then Contraband is an action within an action movie.

“Hey! Those two movies aren’t anything alike!”

Easy there Ace Ventura. They’re both action movies, they’re just different styles of action movies.

Haven’t seen Inception? No judgments here; they likely don’t show movies below that rock you’ve been hiding under. Seriously? You just showed up for the School of Life without having done any homework. Go watch it right now. Go! And take this article with you.

And, as for our friend Ace Ventura up there: As far as the storylines go, they couldn’t be more different. They are, however, both action movies. It should be the ambition of every action movie to elevate heart rates and move butt cheeks closer to the edge of seats. Both of these movies do both of those things.

“Yo! I nearly fell asleep in some parts of Inception. There were parts of that movie that got really slow, yo.”

Easy there Jesse Pinkman, I hear where you’re coming from.

In action movies you have to decelerate and take a breath. The goal here is to elevate the heart rate, not stop it. We want to see butts move to the edge of the seat, not fall off. DiCaprio’s intensity during Inception is there when it needs to be. And, yo! Our friend Jesse Pinkman is right: Inception does slow down in places but, where it does, the barometric music from Hans Zimmer holds you spellbound, tight-fisted, desperate for the next thrilling action sequence.

Contraband’s director, Baltasar Kormákur took every floor of the Die Hard building and drove it full speed through the streets of Panama City. Catch your breath during the movie’s slower moments; you’ll need it for what’s waiting for you at the end: two well-devised plot twists and a nail-bitter finish. Inception’s plot twists unravel throughout the movie which demands a significant amount of your attention. Be patient, it’s a fascinating venture about something we all do, and after this movie, will want to do more of.

Looking for a superior movie experience? Look no further than the stellar cast in both films. All of the supporting roles supplement Wahlberg’s intense character in Contraband. Kate Beckinsale, who demonstrated muscle-bound fearlessness in Underworld, demonstrates her versatility in Contraband by flexing those Oxford Dramatic Society muscles as a fierce mother desperate for the safety of her family. Giovanni Ribisi is sinister in the role of drug crime lord, you might hear people say he is guilty of overacting this role, whatever, he’s come a long way from Refrigerator Repair School (Friends.) We’ll forgive Christopher Nolan for recycling the movie stars, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard. But only because of the evolved manner in which these characters assign themselves to each role; except for that of the perennial Michael Cain, who will in my mind forever remain a dirty rotten scoundrel. Neither of the lead rolls is going to win anybody an Oscar but DiCaprio (who after punctuated nominations since 1994 with What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, ultimately landed one in 2020) bestowed his quintessential individuality to his role as a wrongly accused dream thief. Wahlberg, (who’s aspirations for that Grammy have come to pass; who will yet win that elusive golden statue) spearheaded Contraband with pinpoint energy and the desperation the character required.
