Daggers Destiny by Linnea Tanner is a historical fiction that takes place among Celtic culture. The main character, Catrin, is the king’s daughter and is torn between her loyalty to her father and her lover Marcellus. Unfortunately, Marcellus is a Roman king’s son and their love is forbidden yet they keep trying to find each other. So it is a love story filled with historical inspired drama.
I loved how despite all of the political nonsense between their families Catrin and Marcellus never seemed to give up on their hopes and dreams for each other. There are also a lot of magical and religious things going on in this story as well. I found all the Celtic and Roman mythology and legends to be entertaining and a great way to tie everything together. I also love how the writer makes it seem as if you are there with her characters. Her writing is so descriptive and detailed that I was able to visualize the world and the people inside my mind.
I will say that as much as I loved the beginning and most of the middle I was a little torn with the ending. I understand that this is a book in the middle of its series but it was too overwhelming and emotional for me personally. My problem is that I got so wrapped up in the characters’ stories that I felt like I was living this fiction as a reality. While parts of this story triggered my PTSD other parts had me emotionally torn as to whether I could handle the next book in the series.
I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. I did not see any spelling or grammatical errors so it seemed this book was professionally edited in my opinion. While I enjoyed the book and the idea behind it I did have some personal trying times reading it near the end. The only reason I didn’t rate it a 4 out of 4 is because I found some of it too be too traumatic for me. This is strictly my own opinion so others may find this to be right up their alley.
This book is a great read for those who enjoy other cultures as well as history in general. I also believe it’s a great read for those who love magic and fantasy. It is extremely graphic so this may not be the best match for younger readers. There are also a few curse words and demeaning insults spread throughout so read at your own discretion.
However, I do not believe in magic nor do I condone the practice of any rituals in this book. I do feel that the writing in this novel was pretty juicy and kept my attention the entire time I was reading. This is a pretty good series for those who love romance and adventure. This book and its series is also great for those who love history and admire a good story. I warn you this is the second book in the series and it ends in a crazy cliffhanger.
I know I seem to have not enjoyed the book but I have a hard time with books in a series. I am the type of person who needs closure so sometimes when I am in the middle of a new series and I have to wait for the next book I get pretty stressed out. I bet some of you may like this book so don’t just take my opinions into account. Please read the book and form your own opinions and feelings about the characters. Who knows? You might just like it.
