'Cruella' Review
Born Brilliant, Bad, and a little bit Mad
Cruella De Vil is one of those villains that everyone just loves to hate.
Since Disney has been making money off of Villain origin stories, it came as no surprise that Cruella was on their list starring Emma Stone.
It's not a bad film, Disney has definitely made worse movies, but it's not exactly great either.
One thing I will point out to everyone, is that in every other rendition of 101 Dalmations, Cruella is depicted as a fashion designer of epic proportions and is the boss in every sense of the word in her life, she works for no one but herself.
So I'm confused why people were trash talking this new Cruella movie calling her a b!tch boss and 'too feminist'? They basically called her Miranda Priestly from the Devil Wears Prada, and I fail to see why that's a bad comparison? Is a female boss in the fashion industry only okay for characters that Meryl Streep portrays?
I don't think the people with those opinions actually saw the original movies with Cruella De Vil.
Because. She. IS. A. Fashion. Boss.
????
So, why is it such a f*&^ing shock that that's how her origin story was portrayed?
Also, London fashion is top tier fashion, Mrianda Priestly was working with basically Target knock offs with gold accents while Cruella was creating her own label and some kickass outfits along the way.
Cruella could beat the sh!t out of Miranda Priestly, fight me.
So the movie isn't great, what the f&ck did you think you were gonna get out of a Cruella movie? That she was throwing away dreams of being a pastry chef to design her own fashion label? That she gave up a career as a politician in Parliament to skin puppies for fur coats?
Let's face it, it comes down to one simple fact that Cruella is a FEMALE boss. How dare Hollywood produce a movie that centers around strong, female villains.
That was sarcasm. Just so you know.
To me, the Cruella movie showed me a business world where a woman was going against a worthy competitor who fought her because of her talent; not because of her gender.
Do you have any idea how much of a change that is? As a woman, when I see a movie about a woman in the workforce, she's usually fighting for gender equality. No, she's ALWAYS fighting for gender equality; she's fighting a sexist boss/coworker, sexual abuse/violence, catty coworkers, hitting a glass ceiling, invading a 'boys club', etc.
It is f*&^ing annoying.
I am sick and tired of seeing women struggle with the same thing over and over again. And on a semi-unrelated note, a woman being raped is the same as killing the wife of a male protagonist; the whole 'fridging' trope. Yes, rape happens and its absolutely horrifying, murder is traumatizing and will make you do things you'd never think of before. But male protagonists also go through different ways of advancing their own characters, why do women ALWAYS have to be sexually violated in order to do so?
That's a whole other article. DON't @ me.
Anyway, Cruella isn't a great film but it is fun and inspiring. I'm inspired by that movie as an artist, inspired to see the world in a different way, inspired to express myself without fear of judgement from those that don't matter.
If you're born bad, brilliant, and a little bit mad, it's important to accept it. After all, you're only given a small spark of madness, you must'nt lose it.
