The new Batman animated series Caped Crusader actually has very little to do with Batman or Bruce Wayne. It is however doing a very good job of introducing just about everyone else that exists in Gotham City. We have seen Harley, Barbara Gordon, Harvey Dent, Selina Kyle and Montoya. This series is doing a good job of telling isolated stories, yet there are still quite a few open ended storylines that have yet to be resolved. I hope that changes by the end of the season.
Episode 7 has commissioner Gordon under threat. There is an attack on him outside of the courthouse. Someone in prison ordered a hit on him and his old school bravado could be the reason that he gets hurt. Barbara is amazing and I love her. She really pushes back against her father at every turn and their relationship is just so well written.
Batman is so far behind. He has no idea where the commissioner is and he is attempting to warn Barbara but he’s just driving around Gotham in his Bat costume, all leisurely. Sometimes it is hilarious how useless Batman is. And then the fun twist is that the target was never the commissioner it was on Barbara. One of her clients that landed in prison was very unhappy with his fate. But of course her dad saves the day.
We are now at a carnival, we have done a lot of talking about Harvey Dent but we’ve spent very little actual time with him. Maybe we will see him become two faced this season. Maybe they are setting up something major for next season. But this show really does function like the original animated series in the sense that there are no big overarching stakes. They are very isolated. And they are very self contained.
Ugh this whole episode centers around little orphan children because apparently the goal is to make me cry. One of these little girls is evil and she is literally sucking the life out of these poor little boys. And now I am sad. Her brother is her keeper but I can’t tell if she is a science experiment gone wrong or if she is magic of some kind.
These random circus folk start kicking the shit out of Bruce, because apparently he’s only worth a damn if he’s wearing a cape. Sorry guys I am really not a Batman fan. He is the Squirrel Girl of DC and I will not be explaining myself.
There is something super shady going on with Harvey. He is in the middle of a Mayoral election and the criminals of Gotham are trying to control how he handles criminal cases.
This little girl is super buff. Batman gets his ass kicked a lot in this show. Love that. He calms her down by telling her that she accidentally killed her brother. She seems to be allergic to sunlight. As soon as the sun comes up she starts to burn. And Bruce being who he is, can’t let her die so he covers her with his big Batcape and carries her back.
These little kids are so cute. I both love and hate stories that center around little kids. I love babies so much and I have too many feelings while watching kid-centered stories. I need to know what is going on with Harvey Dent, he has a backbone which is very nice. Adaptation wise they are doing a relatively good job. Characterizations seem to be relatively accurate, I am still a little salty about Harley but I will give it till the end of the season before launching any formal complaints.
