When I was at San Diego Comic Con I heard a lot about Hazbin Hotel. Now before that I had seen the title before but I had absolutely no concept of what it was about, what genre it was or anything like that. Well at SDCC I found out that it was an animated musical tv show about demons. There isn’t a single thing that could be more up my alley. So I have been binge watching the first season of the series. The second season is on it's way and I can not wait.
First of all Charlie is the cutest sweetest thing in the whole world. Her and Vaggie are adorable best friends but they are also super gay. There is no way that they aren’t. It’s literally one of the first things that I yelled at the screen when I started watching the show. Now I also know that they are going to make me wait until the very last episode until they confirm that for me but I know it in my heart.
As far as this storyline goes I think it's adorable that Charlie thinks that she can rehabilitate these demons. But the fact that they basically get genocided by heaven every year is an incredible premise. And then those stakes get raised when an angel gets killed. The show does a really good job of getting you invested in not just the characters but the actual narrative as well.
The music is also obviously an important element to this show. I think it incredible that the creative team has managed to create so many songs of different styles and genres. And the cast has just executed them so well. I think the hardest thing about musical tv shows with original music is making it interesting, keeping people engaged and allowing the song to tell the story. And that is something that the show does very well.
We finally got some more background for Angel. Angel’s story is probably the saddest. There is just a lot going on there. That said there is clearly more to Alaster than we’ve seen so far.
Poor Charlie finally learns that heaven is only occupied by hypocrites who aren't actually any better than the souls that are in hell. AND she finds out that Vaggie was an angel that participated in the exterminations. That was a wild twist that I definitely did not see coming. And Charlie obviously has a very hard time coping with that information. But because she has such a sweet heart she forgives her lie so much faster then I would. That was like a huge secret, and Charlie is maybe a little too nice.
Okay so this last fight was very intense. I really hope we get more Lucifer next season, since they finally reveal where Lilith has been I think that is a strong possibility. Sir Pentious is now in heaven so I am at least hopeful that we will see him again. But these last few episodes really opened up a whole lot of things for season 2. I know we are going to see more of Vox because Vivienne has already said that. But they also set up Lilith, and Alistair. There is clearly more to Alistair's story then we have been told so hopefully we will get to see that play out. AND THEN we have the fact that Charlie made a deal with him and we have no idea when that will come up again or what it will actually entail. And now that we are seeing a little more of heaven, what does Adam dying do to the proceedings up there?
Season 2 is going to be action packed. The last couple of episodes in season 1 opened up so many storylines and questions that needed to be answered. I appreciate that it ended on a super musical theatrey song and a pretty decent cliffhanger. I have no news as to when we might be getting season 2 but I am hopeful that we will have some relatively soon. I know that in July they were in the development phase. That generally means writing and music. So it might be a while yet.
