Doctor Who

One of my favorite shows of all time is such because of how heartfelt, emotional and in touch the characters and dialogue are. Of course my favorite Doctors are 9-11 but they all have some incredible lines that speak to the enormity of Doctor Who. So here I go with some of my favorite lines from the timeless show.

10) “NEVER BE CRUEL. NEVER BE COWARDLY. REMEMBER, HATE IS ALWAYS FOOLISH AND LOVE IS ALWAYS WISE. ALWAYS TRY TO BE NICE, BUT NEVER FAIL TO BE KIND.”

The Doctor’s mantra, his oath to himself, continues to tie all the Doctor’s lives together. It reveals so much about his darkness, and his hope as well as how hard he strives to be a good person. He’s constantly trying to be better and make-up for the things that he’s done. His continued quest for penance is one of the many reasons Doctor Who is such a brilliant show.

9) “NEVER CRUEL OR COWARDLY. NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER GIVE IN.”

Something spoken by nearly all of the Doctor’s, it not only gives his character strength but it's also something that gives the audience strength as well. Doctor Who is somewhat of a comfort show for a lot of people but definitely for me. And his struggle with himself is definitely a reason why.

8) “YOU DON’T JUST GIVE UP. YOU DON’T JUST LET THINGS HAPPEN. YOU MAKE A STAND! YOU SAY NO! YOU HAVE THE GUTS TO DO WHAT’S RIGHT, EVEN WHEN EVERYONE ELSE JUST RUNS AWAY.”

Rose Tyler is one of the greatest TV characters of all time, her strength and her lack of tolerance for taking anyone’s shit is something that I have always loved about the Doctor’s best companions. Her love story with the Doctor also remains one of my favorite storylines.

7) “THE WAY I SEE IT, EVERY LIFE IS A PILE OF GOOD THINGS AND BAD THINGS. THE GOOD THINGS DON’T ALWAYS SOFTEN THE BAD THINGS, BUT VICE VERSA, THE BAD THINGS DON’T ALWAYS SPOIL THE GOOD THINGS OR MAKE THEM UNIMPORTANT.”

I mentioned that Doctor Who is one of my comfort shows, it's actually one I crawl into when I am super depressed and this is one of the quotes that sings through my mind when I need a little extra help.

6) “WHAT’S THE POINT IN TWO HEARTS IF YOU CAN’T BE A BIT FORGIVING NOW AND THEN?”

Once again it shows the motivations of the Doctor and shows what kind of show this is. They are all about helping people and making the universe better.

5) “THE UNIVERSE HAS TO MOVE FORWARD. PAIN AND LOSS, THEY DEFINE US AS MUCH AS HAPPINESS OR LOVE. WHETHER IT'S A WORLD OR RELATIONSHIP….EVERYTHING HAS IT'S TIME AND EVERYTHING ENDS.”

This one is definitely more melancholy than some of the others, but it's raw and real and it shows that despite the Doctor’s constant saving of the universe, bad things still happen.

4) “EVERYTHING ENDS, AND IT’S ALWAYS SAD, BUT EVERYTHING BEGINS AGAIN TOO. AND THAT’S ALWAYS HAPPY. BE HAPPY.”

This show never fails to let me find hope in even its most depressing storylines. Doctor Who shows us that there is always a reason to have hope.

3) “I’M THE DOCTOR, AND I SAVE PEOPLE”

Very succinctly put, the entire purpose of the show. Now this quote isn’t actually as literal as it sounds, at least not to me. The Doctor saves people, physically from other aliens and their planets exploding, sure but he also saves people like Rose and Amy with friendship and adventure.

2) “LOVE IS NOT AN EMOTION. IT’S A PROMISE”

As a married woman who is head over heels in love with my husband this quote is very on the nose but I still love it and the truth it speaks.

1)” IN 900 YEARS OF TIME AND SPACE, I’VE NEVER MET ANYONE WHO WASN’T IMPORTANT.”

This is my favorite for several reasons, this quote was literally posted on my bedroom mirror and I looked at it everyday for years because I needed it. This is still my go to quote for comfort when I’m feeling less than happy.

Doctor Who is filled with amazing, funny, and witty dialogue but the reason I watch the show is for it's heart so to me these are the some of the most impactful words ever spoken on the show.
