An app for that

An app for recommending TV shows

These days there is an app for everything, banking, shopping, food delivery etc. So why is there not an app to recommend shows? Imagine a small questionnaire users would fill out, then just like an online dating website you are matched with the shows that fit your criteria.

One of my favorite TV shows of all time is a show called Westworld, and on this show, artificial intelligence is so smart that one of the machines can basically predict anything about a person or a situation, and prepare for the outcome. I am not saying that we are that advanced, but surely we can come up with an algorithm to get people the shows they want.

In my head the way it would work would be kind of like a case by case scenario. For example, some people are not fully sold on a new show until they read the reviews, for some people it's the negative reviews, for others it's the positive reviews, but if you are like me it's both. The app would be able to match you with the perfect show, then show you the reviews or whatever you need to fully sell you on it. For others, maybe they want to know that their friends are watching it and like it. For some it could be people who belong to a certain social club or type of group likes it, for example if the app wanted to sell me on a show and told me that guys in their mid to late 30s who own PS4s and like to play GTA V, Madden and said Metal Gear and Uncharted were some of their favorite games love this show, and then showed me a YouTube videos of somebody reviewing the show that fit that criteria, one who liked it, and one who hated it, then I am sold!!! There would be no further information needed. I would watch the show, and at the very least, see what it was about.

Like online dating websites, just connecting people for a first date, does not mean they are going to be together forever, so the next phase of the app would be a way to make a deeper connection to guarantee that you meet your soulmate, or the TV show equivalent 🙂. Maybe that could be a premium version of the app that uses a longer questionnaire and more data to match you. For example it could ask you something like your top 5 favorite shows of all times, and then get similar shows to those, maybe even shows that are made by the same people that made their favorite shows. There is a show called love craft country that I love, and maybe if I put that show down as my favorite, the app would point me in the direction of underground, which was made by the same people. If I say the show lost is one of my favorites, the algorithm could point me in the direction of Wayward Pines, because some of the same people worked on them, and things of that nature could build a stronger connection with the shows and raise the possibility of you falling in love with the show it recommends.

We trust technology now with so much of our lives, and it works out ok for most of us, and I think we could use some of that computing power to help us not have to search so long on Netflix to find something to watch 🙂. I'm sure when we see ads pop up on a social media feed there is some sort of Algorithm at work there, but imagine an app completely dedicated to complete just that one task to find the perfect entertainment for you. Doesn't that sound amazing?
