'Ambitions' Canceled After Only One Season

OWN did not renew 'Ambitions' for a second season to many viewers' regret.

It seems that viewers of Ambitions will have to make up their own ending. That's because the drama was not renewed for a second season on OWN. That is so unfortunate because fans of the show have been left hanging with many unsolved stories within the series.

The series premiered on June 18, 2019. The first half of the series ended on August 27. The drama returned for the second half of the first season on November 12. The end of the second half and the finale for the first season was on December 17. In all, the series aired 18 episodes. Little did viewers know at the time that was the end of Ambitions.

Official Announcement

Leading star Robin Givens posted on her Instagram page on Thursday, January 23, 2020 that OWN has canceled Ambitions after only one season. Series co-creator, Jamey Giddens confirmed the cancellation on Twitter. OWN also confirmed the cancellation.

Ratings

When Ambitions premiered, there were 1.18 million total viewers. Instead of the number rising, they dipped throughout the season. The finale viewership was down to 0.57 million viewers with a 0.1 rating.

When co-creator Giddens was asked why the show was canceled, his response was, "Your guess is as good as mine." He tweeted, "Our show was the #1 show in black households for our time slot across broadcasting and cable and more than doubled the viewership of a more critically acclaimed and quickly renewed show on the network."

Reactions from Viewers

After the news was announced that the series had been canceled, many fans posted their shocking surprise and concerns on social media. They expressed that the show had great acting from some A-list actors and great storylines and so many other things to love about the series. They conclude that they wish the show would have continued for more than just one season.

The cancellation of Ambitions came a month after David Makes Man was renewed for a second season in December 2019 with lower ratings. Some people are wondering why that series with worse ratings on OWN was renewed and not Ambitions. That show started off with 0.53 million, fewer than what Ambitions ended up with. David Makes Man never did get any traction. It ended up with only 0.33 million viewers and a 0.1 rating. Viewers are still puzzled why Ambitions was canceled.

Cast That Will Be Missed

Many of the stories in Ambitions were centered around Stephanie Carlisle Lancaster, played by Robin Givens. Somehow she was involved in many of the situations whether they were positive or negative. She played her part well as the wife of Atlanta Mayor Evan Lancaster, played by Brian J. White.

Amara Hughes, played by Essence Atkins, was a former best friend of Stephanie while they were in college. Since then, they became powerful attorneys and enemies. Rondell Lancaster, played by Brely Evans is Mayor Lancaster’s sister and diner owner who fought throughout the series to keep the diner that has always been in her family.

Storylines Left Hanging

There were many stories left hanging when the first season ended. Now viewers will never know the outcome. For instance, they never found out who killed Evans, Sr. at the end of the first half of the series when he was on his way to propose to the love of his life.

Viewers will never know if Rondell will keep Thelma's Place after her cousin Darcia sold her half to Greg Peters. We will never know who was killed at the end of the series when shots were fired during a retirement party for Stephanie's father.

We will forever wonder if Titus died after being hit by a car. He was taken to the hospital and his wife Amara was seen crying uncontrollably.

The end of Season 1 had so many loose endings that it hard to believe that viewers watched 18 episodes and will never get a conclusion.
