The creature in Alien is nothing more than just that, an ALF. (Alien Life Form). Intellectuals enjoy overcomplicating interpretations of what the Xenomorph could be. Some people could say it represents American fears of foreigners. Okay, but what that overlooks is these creatures are legitimately harming people. It’s not really something to open peoples’ eyes if it turns out that the thing they are using to take a stand against xenophobia when the thing they use as analogies for hate cause damage. The author of this paper prefers to see this alien as nothing more than the alien/ parasite it is. This thing is believed to be the perfect organism. The reason why it is believed to be the perfect organism according to Ash is a ludicrous one. Ash believes that part of its perfecon is because it has no conscience. ‘’I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.’’This is a direct quote from Ash himself. You have to realize who is saying this. Ash is a robot. He has one direcve. Bring this thing back alive. He has speci=c orders to do this. The =lm is science =con nerd or scienst’s wet dream. The space ship, alien planet, blah, blah, blah is one thing, but even something as simple as the face hugger, is watered down and deluded by science. In a pure horror =lm, they would
have hacked at the creature, it would have most likely leapt at it’s a>acker, strangled him with it’s tail, ripped out the eyes, etc... This does not happen in the movie. While Kane is immobilized by this thing, Ripley and Ash discuss the science of why the creature can’t be killed. Sure, this ramps up the tension, but it feels a lot more medical and scien=c than if it were truly a horror =lm.For sciensts and science =con a=cionados, this is a great scene. Here they get to speculate on the science of the thing. Adding in philosophical, social and gender role type interpretaons to the creature is a gross oversight of what’s really going on. Truly what the alien is, not a mother, not a metaphor for xenophobia, all this thing is a threat to humanity from a science =con lens. Granted, in Alien, the ship is a microcosm for man. But it is a =lm that looks at the macrocosm. Makes it a li>le closer to a disaster =lm than many other forms of =lm types. What I mean by that is that disaster =lms are on a grand scale. They group people together and individuality sort of dies. In the simplest of terms, the space cri>er represents two things. Number one, it argues that man is not alone in the universe. Number two, it also asserts that it is stronger than us. Ash admiring it because of its perfect structure, its lack of conscience, its hostlity and its lack of morality shows us why it is such a huge threat. The alien is an organism totally dependent on a host. Now, Ripley and her crew are dependent on each other. They are people, with the excepon of Ash. They all depend on each other to get paid, to get home safely, etc.
Think of how they kill the alien. They burn it up. Who has done this, a person, a woman, we see she is in her underwear and this reaBrms that she’s just a human. Semi- nude, seemingly vulnerable and yet, she destroys the perfect being. Now we as an audience, know Ash is completely full of shit. What perfect being can be destroyed?None. One could argue that hostility is a negative emotion. A perfect being would not feel a negave emoon, unless it was not perfect. Who believes this creature to be perfect? A robot. The general assumpon is that some people go from the premise that robots are somewhat perfect themselves. Anyone that owns a laptop or any other electronic device knows that is completely ignorant. Ash is a robot. Made by humans. Humans are Dawed. How can something imperfect create something perfect? It cannot happen. The alien is adapve. In nature, many species have adopted special traits that allow them to survive. A cockroach is said to be able to survive a nuclear holocaust. These ugly litle bastards are anything but perfect. Think of HG Wells’ War of the Worlds. It was truly horri=c. There really is nothing that is truly original when it comes to =lm or literature. As Al Feldstein of EC Comics once so famously said, ‘’we put new icing on the old cakes.’’That’s all Alien is. It is just a retread of War of the Worlds with a slant towards the science element and understanding the creature as opposed to just destroying it, which they eventually do anyway. This =lm is arguably more important to today’s generaon than those that actually saw it back in 1979. That is, if you interpret the message of the lm as a warning against arrogant meddling with nature. Think of nature preserves.
