Agatha All Along

Episode 8

By Alexandrea CallaghanPublished about a year ago 3 min read

Last weeks episode of Agatha All Along got us back on track as far as the story goes, seeing the story from Lilia’s timeline was very entertaining and did a great job of making us feel a part of the story. That said there is a lot to wrap up and we are in the last two episodes of the show. I am anticipating some things being slightly rushed but let’s see how this goes.

We finally get Rio back, we start with her taking Alice and then Agatha runs into her. Agatha and Rio’s confrontation is heavy. Agatha is protecting Billy, and Rio can’t let him live. His soul is occupying another person’s body and that disrupts the balance. There is so much tension between Agatha and Rio, and obviously between Aubrey and Katheryn. It's very clear that Agatha did not sacrifice her son, Rio took him.

I love the way that silences are used in this show to set up reveals. It allows the characters to figure things out for themselves and it let’s things hang in the air a little longer for the audience.

Agatha breaks up with Rio and it's actually very upsetting. She promises to deliver Billy if Rio lets her go. Now I think this is going to turn into Agatha sacrificing herself for Billy which I have fundamental problems with considering Marvel as a whole picture. You can argue that it would be good character growth for Agatha but the reality is that too often in both Marvel Comics and the MCU women sacrifice themselves “for the greater good”, yet men don’t seem to have this compulsion. It is foundationally sexist.

The remaining coven stumbles into the final trial of the road when they put their shoes back on. Jen unbinds herself after she finds out that Agatha is the one that bound her and left her powerless for 100 years. Watching Jen get her power back, both literally and figuratively was extremely heartwarming and satisfying. So it seems that this final trial is some deep therapy shit. They have to get themselves what they want in order to leave. It seems to be either leave or die. Billy really doesn’t have a choice but to trust Agatha. She helps him remember his last moments with his brother, Billy finds a place for Tommy and he leaves the road. Agatha is left by herself, as predicted.

Aubry has a perfect evil laugh. Rio and Agatha get into a rather intense battle for Agatha’s life. I am glad that she didn’t just sacrifice herself, that brings me great joy. Billy at full power comes to save her. And god damn does Wiccan look cool. These Maximoffs have got some charisma. He grants her power back. And now the fight between Rio and Agatha is far more even. Oh and I spoke too soon, she is in fact sacrificing herself to Lady Death and I get 10 points for Ravenclaw and the MCU loses 10 points for wildly sexist trope usage.

Billy realizes that he created the witches road (a popular fan theory that I hate). The road is a thing in the comics, to make it generated by Billy genuinely doesn’t make any sense. I really wish someone at Marvel would at least glance in the general direction of a comic book, any comic book.

We finally get and Agatha and Rio kiss but it's not in the context that anyone wanted. Bogus. Yeah I was right in that this was incredibly rushed, we really wasted the Salem Seven altogether, and all of that allusion to Agatha’s relationship with Rio and what happened to her son was a waste of time because they didn’t fill out or pay off any of it. I think that the show is good, but it could have been better. There was so much potential and the bones were there but almost nothing major was executed correctly.
