The first episode of Agatha All Along was undeniably captivating. The mystery, the pacing, the way that all the characters played off of each other was brilliantly crafted. Jac Shaeffer has proven that she knows these characters, and more than that, that she cares for them. She is in fact the only writer in the MCU that I trust with my favorite characters. I have quite a few predictions based off this first episode but they gave us the first two so let's get into it.
Agatha did in fact kidnap who we think is Wiccan, and by we I mean me. He mentions the witch's road to her. “The road will give you the thing you want the most” - So this is to be a game of desire. Billy (should) want his mother, Agatha wants her power, and we have yet to see what the other witches want.
When this mystery boy tries to tell Agatha who he is, his words are magically blocked. This is to be another mystery and big reveal. Though I am fairly confident in my assumption that he is Billy. So in the last episode's review/recap I mentioned that this show had super gay energy. I hope that this keeps up because in the comics Billy is a very gay member of the Young Avengers. And since that project has been alluded to, though not formally announced, I am hoping that they do not water down one of my favorite comic book groups.
Patti LuPone!!!! Yay, she just looks like a witch. She was also a perfect casting choice.
The Witches Road seems to elicit a very strong reaction in all the people Agatha talks to. The other witches seem terrified of the thought of walking it. But they all want or need something, so they really don’t have a choice but to follow her.
I also love that Agatha seems to be universally hated by everyone who knows her. And yet she needs them. Billy seems to know exactly what each of these witches needs to hear to join their cause. He’s a little blackmaily and it's great. He definitely has his mothers strength and charisma.
I also love that Marvel seems to be using this show as an opportunity to explore the way magic works. Each of these witches has a specialty. And thus far, even including WandaVision we have not really seen a clear picture of how magic operates in this universe. We haven’t seen how it is practiced, developed, what kinds of magic there are. And I love that Agatha All Along is finally exploring that.
Also this show is funny. This show is mostly mystery, it's heavy, we are experiencing a darker part of the MCU but the way that Agatha quips is hilarious. And it seems very organic. Like natural Katheryn Hahn humor and not “MCU” branded humor.
Agatha keeps seeing all of these solo animals. Animals that seem to omens of some kind. She is very freaked out every time she sees one.
The witches singing the Ballad of the Witches Road while Billy experiences something truly scary was incredible to watch. Visually an amazing sequence. Also I appreciate the song because how are you gonna cast Patti LuPone and not let her sing?
Agatha pisses off the other witches in hopes to get a taste of their power, but their quest to open the door to the witches' road works. And the newly formed coven disappears from what I think are the Salem Seven.
I don’t think I can wait another week for another episode of this show. I am so into it. It has everything that it needs to be amazing. Agatha attracts her team within this episode which is perfect pacing. There is nothing that drags the pacing of this show down. Everything that needs to be accomplished is while also giving us an idea of what is to come. I also love that Billy is getting a decent chunk of this story. He hears something calling to him. Then there is the fact that traditionally covens, and witches are women. So he already feels a sense of being different and not necessarily accepted. Which is very much how Wanda felt through most of her time in the MCU.
