Agatha All Along released its first 2 episodes at once this week. The first people to review it sang its praises, save for a few butthurt internet fanboys who can’t stand the sight of women on their TV screens. I for one am very skeptical about the series if for no other reason then they are adapting The Witches Road which is a very prominent WANDA storyline. And as she is my favorite character, and has yet to have her own solo movie, it very much feels like a slap in the face to take one of her biggest comic book moments and give it to someone else. That said, the promise of a future Scarlet Witch project hangs in the air so I am excited to see how Agatha can help us get there.
Okay, so post memory wiped Agatha is a detective? And is this dead woman supposed to be my wife? I mean Wanda…they were very careful not to reveal her face because we know that Elizabeth Olsen was not available during filming. She was too busy being incredibly badass and filming 3 movies at once.
I have a strong feeling that this title sequence is going to change every episode. They are starting the show like a cop drama. This seems to be a similar structure to WandaVision in the sense that it is modeled after different tv genres. At least that is my prediction. Keeping them stylistically cohesive was a brilliant choice. WandaVision was the MCUs best TV show, they should absolutely be riding what made that show successful.
Does this whole case center around Wanda? Cause I’m okay with that. Obviously this show is going to reveal that she isn’t actually dead. Which real fans have known the whole time. Not even a mountain falling on her head can stop my girl.
There is an appropriate amount of mystery and eeriness in this first episode. The audience gets to go on this road of discovery and realization with Agnes and that is always a good way to tell a story. Let us discover things with the characters. The show feels more interactive this way, connected. Instead of just exposition dumping at us.
Agatha is missing a child….her cat in WandaVision had his name. So we are going to see Agatha’s connection to Wanda, in the sense that they have both loved and lost children.
The character introductions are being done very well. They are happening quickly and are clearly done with intention. Each one brings something different out of Agatha. They seem to all be getting her to try and remember who she is. Now this kid is obviously Wiccan but here's my thing; you can not have Wiccan without Speed. It's the main reason why I really hate the shifted timeline X-Men movies. They committed to Pietro being Magneto’s child but we had no Wanda making everything insufferable.
Aubrey Plaza is a glorious addition to this cast. The woman was meant to play a witch and I really hope this story allows for her character to stick around a while because her and Elizabeth Olsen play off of each other so well, I’d love to see them in the MCU together.
Okay so this story is going to center around Agatha answering for her past. There is so much sexual tension between Aubrey and Katheryn, I love it very much. Super gay energy.
I see the Salem Seven. Sounds like I am going to have a few explanation videos to do.
Everything that made WandaVision brilliant is present in Agatha All Along. The ever present feeling that something more is happening. The main character is trying to remember something, like they can feel something is off. The structure of the character’s life being presented as a television show. The creepiness and mystery. All things that show that the creators and writers understand and care about the characters. I am already invested and very sad that there are only 8 episodes of this show. But I am so ready for what is going to come next. Jac Shaeffer once again proves that she should be the only person in charge of the witchy women of the MCU.
