Episode 9 really shoved a lot of stuff into it's 45 minutes. Almost nothing that was set up or alluded to the whole show was paid off. And it was extremely rushed. The finale is going to be however many minutes of conclusion which also seems like a waste. We didn’t seem to know how to structure this at all. We needed more Rio and Agatha, and we needed more Agatha and Nicky and we needed to not completely waste the Salem Seven. The only real upside to the last episode was seeing Billy descend from the sky as full on Wiccan and I can’t wait to see him pop up again in the MCU, I live for the Children’s Crusade.
We open the final episode with Agatha giving birth in a forest. Rio hovers nearby. We can assume this means that the baby died in childbirth. But she lets him live…for now. Agatha stumbles into a small group of women who also seem to be witches, she drains them of their powers before going along her way. Agatha trains her son to lure witches to her so that she can drain their powers.
UGH the witches road song was a cute little nursery rhyme her and Nicholas used to sing together. Rio takes Nicholas in the middle of the night, breaking Agatha.
This whole flashback episode as the finale was a poor choice. We should have gotten this back during Agatha’s trial, at least pieces of it. The scene where the covens try to open the witches road and she tricks them into giving her their power could have been saved for this episode. Nicholas’ death could have been saved for this episode, but everything else should have been introduced earlier.
I will say it again, not having the Witches road be a real thing is a mistake. Marvel really needs to start respecting their source material. I beg for someone to read a fucking comic book. This is why they had to change the name from Coven of Chaos because then it might indicate that they knew what they were talking about.
And Agatha is back as a ghost which is at least vaguely comic book accurate. So they have at least Wikepedia’d these stories. Billy now has to come to terms with the fact that if he was responsible for the road that he is also responsible for the deaths. Right after this realization Jen pops out of the ground right outside of Westview, fully alive and well and powerful.
Billy returns to Agatha’s basement and it appears he is setting up a ritual for some reason. Banish Agatha? Find Tommy? Bring back Wanda? We have decided to keep Agatha around, which is good because Ghost Agatha brings up some good storylines. Not that they stick to the source material at all, but ya know if they wanted to. They set off to go find Tommy together.
Now we can assume that we won’t see Tommy at the end of this because that would mean that Marvel would have to have cast him already and I doubt that has happened. That said we have fully set up The Children’s Crusade and Vision Quest will help further that along, at least one could hope. Look I think the show had all the pieces, all of the scenes shot were correct and needed to be there it was just structured horribly. Nearly everything in this episode and in Billy’s should have been placed elsewhere, and the 8th episode was rushed and not at all what it should have been.
