A Quiet Place is pretty well regarded as a horror film, but like most movies made in the last decade they just kept deciding to make more of them. Let’s remember that not all movies need to be franchises and not all stories need an “origin”. That said they kept making them anyway so here we are watching A Quiet Place: Day One. The saving grace of this movie is the fact that Lupita is in it. She can do no wrong so the movie can’t be that bad. But Hollywood loves to disappoint me so let’s see.
Samira is a cancer patient that lives in a facility just outside of New York city. Because where is the first place that a creature that hunts by sound be attracted to? Yeah, the loudest city in the world.
I’m glad that they didn’t wait super long to set off this disaster. We knew what was going to happen so it's really just narratively better if you get to it quickly. They also do a decent job of establishing that this thing is attracted to sound.
Samira is clinging to her cat. I am so sorry but animals are unpredictable and you can’t make them be quiet, under no circumstances would I be keeping an animal during a disaster like this. You have to be a special kind of stupid, I don’t care how much you love that animal. It is not worth the lives of everyone around you.
And we start to see that desperation to live when someone gets hysterical and can’t keep themselves quiet and another character has to snap his neck.
The one thing that will always work for these movies is the lack of dialogue. If you’ve followed me for a while then you know that I LOVE when directors and writers can tell a clear, heartfelt, coherent story without excessive dialogue. Perhaps it's because it's the part that stresses me out the most about writing, despite me being very good at it. Perhaps it's because as an actor I love when actors are allowed to do their jobs and flex their muscles as much as possible. But I love seeing stories that don’t rely on words. So the Quiet Place films will always have a leg up for me, no matter how much I think sequels and prequels are unnecessary.
Jesus Christ. Obviously a huge crowd of people walking in the same direction is going to make noise and then once the creatures start attacking these motherfuckers can’t keep themselves from screaming. At that point whatever happens to you is your fault. I don’t feel bad for stupid people and if you know, I only die if I make noise and you can’t manage to keep yourself quiet then you deserve whatever happens to you.
I sound like such a hater but I am so tired of this cat. This cat is going to get her killed.
The creature design is very Alien, so is the tracking with sound thing. Like I know that isn’t exclusive to Alien, but isn’t it though?
Well we established at the top that our main character is dying of cancer, so this whole movie was just her last few days being extremely terrifying and traumatic. But she was always going to die which I guess makes it less sad? I think as far as unnecessary prequel/sequel movies go it was pretty good. Lupita is phenomenal and I love that she got to front what is basically a silent film on her own. You really get to see how incredible she is. The ending being her sacrificing herself so her friend can get away was really a great ending. It was tense, and brilliantly executed. Overall I think the movie gets a solid 7.5/10. I am probably not going to rewatch it a lot it is a decent film and Lupita is in fact the best part of it.
