Creature Commandos

Episodes 1-3

James Gunn’s first release of his DC universe is the animated series Creature Commandos. Now this series centers once again around Amanda Waller using prisoners to do her dirty work. The thing with this is that it really makes it look like James Gunn is incapable of building a team without using Amanda Waller…or incarcerated beings. It just inherently feels repetitive but as this is a new age of DC I will try to keep an open mind.

So our creature commandos are being sent to take down Circe and the “Sons of Themyscira” . I will put that in quotes every time I have to use it because there are no sons of Themyscira, the island of the Amazons has no men. At least that is the story that they set up at the very beginning of the show and then we took a royal detour, bringing in a princess for some reason. The story seems pretty confused for the first episode of a new series.

Flag and Doctor Phosphorus get into it when Doctor. P tries to steal Rick’s phone that controls the shock chips in their necks. Also Doctor Phosphorus is Alan Tudyk and I love him very much.

The second episode focused pretty heavily on The Bride and her origin. This is a little better. I feel like if you are going to title something Creature Commandos then you should in fact focus on the actual creatures. I don’t mind them being sent on missions, they just need to stick to a single mission. We only have 7 episodes (random choice) so one overarching mission and an episode each on the commandos. But there seems to be 2 missions, or just a lot of extra steps here that are entirely unnecessary.

Well the mission comes to the commandos when Circe makes her way to Frankenstein's house with her merry group of incels. These human men get their asses absolutely handed to them by the Bride, obviously. Curious as to why Circe chose such weak henchmen. Honestly, because they were probably really easy to manipulate, cause they’re stupid.

The show is rated PG-13 but it is definitely geared more to adults, there is some cursing but I am referring more to the fact that we see the Bride and Viktor having sex in front of Frankenstein’s monster.

The third episode seems to be focused more on the monsters developing relationships with each other which I love. GI-Robot and Nina are getting quite close and it's adorable. It also focuses more on GI-Robot who is hilarious. He is fully programmed to kill Nazi’s and do nothing else. So nearly every line out of his mouth involves his desire to kill Nazi’s.

The music choices are very James Gunn. They certainly fit the scenes but some of them feel really random.

After GI wipes out nearly all of her henchmen Circe blows the shit out of him. Which is very disappointing because we love him and Nina. and Circe gets herself to the princess. The established story and goal here has most certainly not been accomplished.

They set up Circe wanting to take over Themiscrya but we done wrapped this up by the end of the third episode. And apparently her mission wasn’t that serious because we seemed to take a really hardcore detour here. We can assume that GI Robot is dead for now. But he’s a machine and comic book media has a hard time letting anyone actually stay dead so only time will tell I suppose. So far I am not super enthralled but we’ve got 4 more episodes to convince me James Gunn can handle everything he laid out.
