Insecure is a show that has captivated and gathered the full attention of the millions that follow it. It is a show that follows the lives of a group of African American men and women as they navigate through their lives and as they tackle the issues they face.
Here are 11 reasons why we love the show.
1. Issa’s shenanigans
From rapping in bathroom mirrors to her passion for her jobs to quitting her job without well thought out plans, to her interactions with her girlfriends, we do love to tag along to Issa’s entertaining shenanigans.
Issa leaves us laughing, crying, judging her, resonating with her and a sea of other wild emotions.
2. Relatability
Insecure is soooooo relatable.
I mean, who hasn’t quit their job without a plan? Who hasn’t had to go live with a friend for a while because they have nowhere else to go? Have you been in a relationship that you shouldn’t have been in in the first place?
Insecure is 100% relatable and that’s why we love it. It explores real relationships, real situations and real people. You almost see yourself in the character, in the scene, and in the situations, the characters are in. And if you can’t see yourself, the show might remind you of someone you know in real life.
3. Diversity
Diversity is at the core of Insecure. The show tells stories about people living different lives. Some include people who are earning a good income in their stable jobs, people in between jobs, men and women, relationships that work, those that are married, single life, home life, and work life. Insecure is not a single story.
Diversity is also showcased in the characters cast in the show. We have African Americans, Caucasians, Asians etc.
4. The writers listen to the fans
When Lawrence broke up with Issa and went on to hook up with another girl which could have implied that he was no longer a character in the show the fans protested online with the #Lawrencehive #nolawrencenopeace hashtags and the character was brought back the following season even though shooting had already been wrapped up.
The writers put the fans first when writing scripts for the show. We understand the creative licence the writers hold but we also appreciate that they consider the thoughts, opinions, feelings and attachments that the fans have to the characters and the plotline. And that’s a core reason why we love Insecure.
I hope they listen to the fans and don’t stop at season 5.
5. Giving nods to greats
Don’t you love it when you see your favourite people on your favourite television shows?
Season 3 of Insecure in particular was a huge nod to Beyonce’s Lemonade album. The lyrics, the lines and anecdotes in the album were strongly quoted throughout the show. In the plot, the characters also go to Beyonce’s Coachella performance even though they never get to see the show because of course their usual shenanigans! In the latest season of the show, you can see Issa in her house attempting what looks like a Michael Jackson signature kick.
When the characters pay homage to the greats, we love them even more. It makes them relatable and we feel like they are just like us. We could even be their friends.
6. Sex scenes
Who doesn’t love those? Even writers here on Vocal love to read stories about sex. My sex stories are some ofmy best performing stories on the platform.
The sex scenes in the show are great to watch. And they do treat us with several of them. They do show the men’s buts in the sex scenes on Insecure. And men- secure are hot! So are the women!
7. Second chances
Who doesn’t love second chances? We all do screw up sometimes you know, and we’re lucky and privileged to get second chances. This is why we also love Insecure. When Lawrence breaks up with Issa and each go about their lives we all were secretly wishing that they get back together and they do so to the joy of many.
In season 4 when Issa quit her job leaving her financially insecure, driving a Lyft and she has to live with Nathan while she looks for other opportunities that could help her financially, we are rooting for her. She eventually gets this job as a caretaker of a property where she gets her own apartment and another chance to attaining a sense of stability in her life.
Again, when Issa and Molly’s friendship seems to be falling apart and it seemingly looks like they going to end it for good, they get chances where they are able to talk and consider reviving it. We do hope that they get to do it in the coming season.
7. They tackle real issues
From financial issues to jobs, friendships, love, sex, confusion homelessness, drugs, depression and mental issues among other things, fans of the show are treated to value entertainment that tackles real issues.
The real issues that may happen in the day to day situations and the manner in which they are handled add to the relatability of the show. From cheating in relationships to fear and uncertainty etc, the fans can learn something from the show.
8. Humour
Insecure is hilarious.
With Issa rapping in bathroom mirrors, to funny friends, neighbours and colleagues, the show leaves you cracking your ribs.
9. Hot men
Are the men in Insecure hot or what! Nathan, Lawrence, Asian baeall the men in the show are very good looking. It’s very uplifting that the show casts good looking black men.
10. Issa and Molly’s friendship
Even if it suffers its own turmoils, Issa and Molly’s friendship is very captivating in the show. It shows the ups and downs of friendships, and what friends do for each other in good and bad times.
The differences in their finances does not come in between their friendship even though the contrast is clear.
The show puts value in platonic relationships.
11. The girls
When the girls get together, know that aloooooot is going to happen. The dynamics between the clique is very interesting to watch. They are so different yet they are so much alike. They are in different aspects and stations in their lives yet they still find some things to bond over.
They laugh, they cry, they support each other, they listen to each other, and they do fun things together. The girl dynamic on the show is very captivating. It makes you want to join them.
-------------
Even though the fifth season is going to be the last, we shouldn’t be sad because Issa Rae just announced another show that she has been co-writing. Hopefully, it will be as interesting, as funny, as informative, as relatable and as uplifting as Insecure.
