Maps & Madness
From the haunted, mist and monster filled halls of Briarstone Asylum, to unknown realms brimming with Lovecraftian horrors, we lay our scene. Blood filled chambers, otherworldly creatures, and endless opportunities to come face to face with your more diabolical self (lost memories and doubles alike). There’s no better way to spend Friday night than engaging with these terrors side by side with your friends, except perhaps as the guide on the other side of the table.

Replaying Old Video Games as Self-Care
It started with the innocent discovery of the Kingdom Hearts bundle on my fiancé’s Xbox One. Growing up, our gaming consoles were shared by the family, but technically came as Christmas and birthday gifts to my younger brother. So when I left, they stayed.

Wild Arms Review
The first RPG released on the PlayStation and it set the bar high for all the games that would follow it. Released in North America in 1996 I would not get around to playing this game until 2012. And I can tell you right up front that I regret it. From the very first moment that I hear the music I knew; I just knew this was going to be great. For those of you not in the know, this game is made up from several elements that on paper should not work. It is a Japanese style RPG, that strives to emulate a Spaghetti Western and if that was not weird enough for you it attempts to accomplish this by using standard Anime story elements. But like chocolate and Peanut Butter, this game comes together to be greater than the sum of its parts.

Rhodri
This comes from my journal for the solo RPG Ironsworn and tells the tale of my character, Rhodri. As such, it is not presented as a typical story, but more as a narrative of events during a play session. (Game moves, results, and random decisions generated by oracles within the game will be listed in brackets.) Actions (called Moves) are resolved by rolling 3 dice: one 6-sided and two 10-sided.

How To Build an Imperial Commissar in The Pathfinder RPG
There are few sights as awe-inspiring, or as outright terrifying, as that of an imperial commissar. In their iconic peaked caps and greatcoats, it is their job to motivate the troops... through whatever means necessary. Sometimes that means charging the guns of the enemy with sword in hand, bolt pistol barking. Sometimes it means executing those who falter in their duty, making it clear to every guardsman that no matter the terror before them it cannot be worse than the officer at their backs.

To role-play or not to role-play: that is the question
Role playing is a widespread practise among the world of gaming (and not only within the video games industry), whose goal is to enhance and improve the bond between the player and the character who is being impersonated. Table top RPG games appeared for the first time on the market in 1974 with Dungeons & Dragons and have become quite popular nowadays, with examples such as the above mentioned D&D, World of Darkness, 7th Sea or Star Trek Adventures, to start with. When the whole concept of gaming went through its digital evolution, we can all imagine the possibilities that this implied: the chance to actually see a character and the world around it did nothing more than amplify the whole connection between player/playable character. With the never ending evolution of video gaming and the whole innovation of the story telling in games narrated through the eyes of a character (both in first person and third), this kind of connection grew stronger and stronger, and the chances to play games that allow the player to actually choose the actions of a character are several. Games such as Detroit: Become Human, Until Dawn, The Witcher Saga, Cyberpunk 2077 or The Elder Scrolls Series give the player the freedom to determine the actions they take (some more than others), actions that in most cases have a strong impact on the story itself.

Stardew Valley changed my life. Top Story - March 2021.
The global pandemic has forced all of us to rethink our daily lives, re-evaluate what we hold dear and what we crave in our entertainment. It has affected me in ways I didn't think were possible. For one, the boredom and loneliness had me thinking about trying a cutesy farming RPG with ancient graphics. Little did I know that it would change my life and cause me to change the way I see retro gaming.
