Silent Hill 2
Why it's the best game of the franchise

Silent Hill 2 Is Back, Baby! A Journey Through the Fog
Spoiler Alert: If you’ve never ventured into the misty, eerie town of Silent Hill, you might want to brace yourself. If you’ve played any of the Silent Hill games, well, prepare for a nostalgia trip with a brand new, shiny PS5 version of Silent Hill 2. As someone born in 1991 (so I’m technically a 90s kid, but who’s counting?), I remember first diving into these spine-chilling horrors when I was way too young, and honestly, I’ve never looked back. Silent Hill, and especially Silent Hill 2, are forever my favorite gaming experiences. You can never forget that fog, the creepy radios, and, oh yeah, the terrifying monsters that lurk around every corner.

Let’s take a deep dive into the Silent Hill series, reliving some of its most iconic moments and talking about the highs, the lows, and which game (in my humble, but definitely correct opinion) reigns supreme.
A Little History: The Foggy Beginnings of Silent Hill
So, where did it all begin? The year was 1999, and Konami unleashed Silent Hill on the world. The first game was a PlayStation exclusive, and it immediately caught the attention of horror game lovers for its disturbing atmosphere and psychological depth. What made it stand out was its unique blend of survival horror, dark storylines, and... that damn fog. The eerie atmosphere felt like a character of its own—because who can forget trying to navigate through the fog while your radio crackles with the sound of monsters? It was terrifying!
The original Silent Hill is the OG, but it’s Silent Hill 2 that holds a special place in my heart, and it’s why I’m so excited for the recent PS5 release.
Silent Hill 2: The One We’re All Talking About
In 2001, Silent Hill 2 was released on the PlayStation 2, and it took everything that made the first game iconic and ramped it up to terrifying new heights. You play as James Sunderland, a guy looking for his wife in the haunting town of Silent Hill. But there’s a twist—his wife, Mary, is supposed to be dead. Enter: the psychological horror. The game is packed with mind-bending puzzles, twisted monsters, and an unforgettable atmosphere that stays with you long after you turn the game off. Who can forget the first time you meet Pyramid Head? Yeah, I think I need a new pair of pants just thinking about it.

The PS5 remake of Silent Hill 2 looks absolutely stunning, bringing the fog-filled town to life in full 4K. The visuals are sharp, but that same feeling of dread and isolation is intact. Even as a kid, I was terrified of what lay beyond the fog—and now, on PS5, it’s like that terror is fresh all over again.
The Best and Worst of Silent Hill: Ranking the Games
Now, let’s get into the fun part—ranking the Silent Hill games. Some are legendary, and others... well, let's just say they didn’t quite hit the mark. But, in the world of Silent Hill, even the "worst" games still have something spooky to offer.
Silent Hill 2 (2001) – The Pinnacle of Horror
Best Parts: The complex story, unforgettable monsters, psychological horror.
Worst Parts: The combat can feel a bit clunky, but honestly, you’re here for the story, not the fighting.
My Rating: 10/10 (Absolutely iconic. This is the one that gets my heart pumping just talking about it!)
Silent Hill 1 (1999) – The Start of Something Dark
Best Parts: Atmospheric tension, the eerie town, and its creepy, disturbing vibe.
Worst Parts: The graphics are, well, dated by today's standards.
My Rating: 8/10 (A classic, but some of those tank controls can be a pain!)
Silent Hill 3 (2003) – Heather’s Dark Journey
Best Parts: The terrifying atmosphere and Heather’s badass attitude.
Worst Parts: It’s a bit too much of a “let’s stick with what worked” game, and some fans thought it was too similar to 2.
My Rating: 8/10 (Still one of my faves, but not quite on the same level as 2.)
Silent Hill 4: The Room (2004) – A New Twist
Best Parts: The creepy "room" concept, blending reality with the supernatural.
Worst Parts: The plot felt a little disjointed, and it moved away from the traditional Silent Hill formula.
My Rating: 7/10 (Unique, but not everyone’s cup of tea.)
Silent Hill: Origins (2007) – A Prequel That Tries Too Hard
Best Parts: The unsettling atmosphere, especially for fans wanting more backstory.
Worst Parts: The controls and gameplay feel dated, even for a PSP game.
My Rating: 6/10 (Not terrible, but nothing will ever top the classic games.)
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories (2009) – A Reimagining
Best Parts: The fresh take on the original story, with a psychological twist.
Worst Parts: The lack of traditional combat left some fans feeling like they were missing out on key Silent Hill elements.
My Rating: 6/10 (An interesting reimagining, but it lost that eerie feeling of the original.)
Silent Hill: Homecoming (2008) – A Love-Hate Game
Best Parts: The creepy town, improved combat mechanics, and dark story.
Worst Parts: The new protagonist didn’t quite have the same emotional weight as James.
My Rating: 5/10 (It has its moments, but it wasn’t quite what the series needed.)
Silent Hill: Downpour (2012) – A Mixed Bag
Best Parts: Open-world exploration, creepy environments, and puzzles.
Worst Parts: The combat and clunky mechanics didn’t work for everyone.
My Rating: 5/10 (It's got its charm, but not as scary as the earlier titles.)
Silent Hill: Book of Memories (2012) – A Completely Different Beast
Best Parts: It’s an interesting attempt to turn Silent Hill into an action-RPG, and some people appreciate the multiplayer aspect.
Worst Parts: It's a far cry from the original horror experience.
My Rating: 3/10 (This feels like a cash grab rather than a true Silent Hill experience.)
So, What’s the Verdict?
The PS5 release of Silent Hill 2 has reignited the passion of long-time fans, and it’s a great excuse to jump back into the fog. With its incredible visual overhaul, it’s like rediscovering an old nightmare—but in the best possible way. For me, Silent Hill 2 will always reign supreme, but the series, even in its weaker installments, holds a special place in the hearts of horror game lovers.
Critics and fans may debate the best and worst of the series, but no one can deny that Silent Hill has cemented itself as one of the most iconic horror franchises ever. If you haven’t ventured into the fog yet, what are you waiting for? Silent Hill 2 on PS5 is calling your name.
Now go on—explore the mist, face your nightmares, and remember: in Silent Hill, you never know what lurks just around the corner.
