My Review of "Wolfenstein: The New Order"

An older game that has a lot of punch. I loved every last minute of it.

Wolfenstein: The New Order was released back in 2014 for a whole slew of video game formats. I haven't played Wolfenstein since Wolfenstein 3D back in the 90's. Wolfenstein 3d was huge back in the 90's so I don't really know why I haven't bothered playing any other Wolfenstein game. I actually really liked Wolfenstein 3d so it doesn't make sense.

The new Wolfenstein follows a pretty interesting story idea. I have to admit when I played Wolfenstein 3d I never bothered to take the time to understand the story. In this iteration of Wolfenstein there is a lot more emphasis on the story and it is pretty interesting.

The movie starts off during the world war II. You are captain B.J. Blazkowicz. You get caught by the Nazi's and are put into a human experimentation laboratory. You will try to escape the experimental laboratory with one of your comrades and the game has you join forces with an underground resistance group trying to fight against the overwhelming Nazi army.

This is alternative universe where the Nazi's have crazy amounts of next generation technology that helps them win World War II. the game takes place in the 1960's after you've recovered from a long coma that you suffered from escaping the human experimentation laboratory. It's kind of cool to see all of the new technology mixed in with some older technology that you would probably expect in the 60's.

The art direction is very interesting and very creative. I like how they did this mix but I have to say I have seen a similar concept to this with the game Resistance on the PlayStation 4. However Resistance is based on a different time so you see a different art style throughout the game. They used an art deco style to their environment whereas Wolfenstein uses a totally different art-style of their own.

The first thing that you will totally enjoy about this movie is that it's a full out action movie. Yes there are some puzzles but they aren't too difficult to figure out. This frantic action style is amazing. I really love the fast pace of this game as well as how it makes you feel superhuman to be able to run into a room and blast away mowing down everyone in your path.

This isn't the only way to play the game. There are methods of sneaking around and simply assassinating your enemies but really the loud action is really where it's at. I can't remember enjoying the game play of a first person shooter like this since Halo and Gears of War.

Blending just the right amount of story, frantic action and small amount of puzzle really makes this movie the perfect game for me. Playing this game 6 years after it came out I can tell some of the graphics weren't up to the level of today's standards but it still looks good. The frame-rate is very fast and feels very smooth with the PlayStation 4. I didn't notice any slowdowns or awkwardness. Yes I did have one or two areas where my character seemed stuck but there were very few.

For those that are looking for a great time for I would expect probably around 8 hours this is a great time. I had a blast playing this one. I usually take a long time off these games and then get back to them after a while but once you pick this game up you will not want to stop.

Overall, I really liked this game and I will definitely be playing Wolfenstein games more often. It is such a great time from start to end. I rarely had any frustrating experiences playing this game. I have to give this game a 9 out of 10. I will be suggesting this game to all of my video game friends and I'm sure they're going to come back to me telling me that they had a great time.
