Wargaming with the Kid
What do you think of when you see the word "wargaming"? Is it an image of a bunch of dudes sitting in a basement, or in a garage crouched over a table peppered with miniatures? Is it hours upon hours of formations, battelines, dice throwing, ecstatic cheers of victory and despair filled cries of defeat, with the occasional savage ribbing of your opponent? I wouldn't fault you for thinking so because, at its heart, that's what it is. However, when I think of "wargaming," I lean more towards defining it as an opportunity to spend a few hours a week of solo time with my son, bonding over list building and beating the crap out of each other on the fictional field of battle.

'Arcana' for the SNES. Top Story - February 2018.
Arcana was one of the SNES games I found at the flea market. Back when I was a kid, my mom used to take me to a local flea market once or twice a month, and there were always tables with video games for sale. Even though Arcana wasn’t an old game at the time, it was released in 1992, it wasn’t one that stores carried much, and I don’t recall seeing it for rent at Blockbuster either, although I’m sure some stores carried it.

Kids these days truly don't understand how exciting it was to finally get the long block in Tetris after piling and piling the other blocks on top of each other. And they certainly don't understand the feeling when the frog finally crosses the street in Frogger. It's little things like these that always remind us why these video games are the greatest.
