Pay-To-Win, Season Passes, and In-Game Purchases; The Exploitation of Modern Gaming
Video games are loved by millions across the world, for one reason or another: they captivate the imagination on a scale that matches and surpasses the film industry, they immerse like no other entertainment medium on the market, or they give the opportunity to play as a space marine shooting demons from hell—who doesn't want that? Many millions more have interacted with them at some other level besides playing as well; be it hardcore gamers who have owned (or still own) several consoles and have no intentions of putting the controller down, or a parent watching their child smash open their first wumpa crate in Crash Bandicoot. Video games have pioneered fun for players for decades now and the medium has seen genuinely incredible growth. However, as with any line of business, the game industry has changed drastically since its inception, and subsequently, so has modern gaming itself.

'Monster Rancher': A Long Forgotten Classic
When I was five or six years old, I would watch my brothers stare at a screen for hours at a time, playing whatever video game they had on their PlayStation. Sometimes I would get drinks of water when it was well past my bedtime, just to watch them play. They had every classic playstation game you could find: Spyro, Crash Bandicoot, Final Fantasy, Legend Of Dragoon, and my favorite game of all, Monster Rancher.

The Revival of Turn-Based Strategy: 'The Battle of Polytopia'
Anyone who is even mildly interested in PC gaming will have heard the name Sid Meier. A pioneer of turn-based strategy, his Civilisation series will forever be the catalyst of nostalgia for gamers all over the world. But while it's great for us to look back on these games with a fondness, there have been little, if any, releases that match Civilisation's calibre. And that's not for want of developers trying. There have been so, so many games that have tried to be the next big turn based strategy, but we all have to admit the playing field has been a bit dry. That is until now; enter: The Battle of Polytopia.

'Super Smash Bros. Ultimate' - The Likely (and Unlikely) Newcomers. Top Story - June 2018.
One of the best things Super Smash Bros. brings is pre-release speculation and that's what this is. This isn't a dream list of who I want or don't want, but several different lists compiled to fulfill four specific categories: Who has a good chance, who DOESN'T have a good chance, potential third party characters, and stretch characters for that big Sakurai surprise. Each category has five entries and those entries are in no particular order.

How to Get Started Playing Dungeons and Dragons
I have been playing tabletop roleplaying games (RPGs) for over twenty years and I never get tired of answering people's questions about my hobby. I was in a bookstore last week, browsing in the tabletop RPG section when a mom and her two sons wandered over. The mom was asking her son about the game he heard of and wanted to try. I was flipping through the latest Dungeons and Dragons title and I overheard the older boy say to his mother: "Let's ask him, he's reading one of the books."

A Job Within a Job: 'Game Dev Tycoon'
I would be lying if I said my dream job isn’t to be working with or on games. It’s probably pretty obvious– I play them as often as I can and write about them in the spaces between. However, many of the technical roles when working on a game require vasts amounts of mathematical & design skill, as well as a penchant for coding; something of which I am hilariously lacking. Something that I have really noticed recently, however, is that games aren’t offering enough to consumers anymore; we are actively seeking new engagement and unique rewarding experiences from our games and a worrying amount aren’t stepping up to the challenge.

A Nod to Nostalgia: 'Pokèmon Quest'
If you were to ask me to embody my childhood nostalgia, 90 percent of it would be in the form of some kind of Pokémon game. I wouldn't even like to estimate the amount of time I have poured into the Pokémon series (something that I know many of you will empathise with). From the original Pokemon Red/Blue Gameboy Colour games, all the way through to Pokémon Go and everything in between, rarely have I been disappointed with a Pokémon game... (Okay, I may have had reservations about Pokémon Go's longevity, but I hear it still has a solid fan base behind it!). So I was fairly confident that I was going to enjoy The Pokémon Company's latest release—Pokémon Quest.

How 'God of War' Creates Dynamic and "Human" Gods
Throughout the God of War franchise, gamers following Kratos’s journey will recognise him as a brutal Spartan God who shows little mercy to those he believes have wronged him, and enjoys basking in the sheer power that he possesses.
