There have been many variations of golf games, from arcade to simulation and even some that are completely different. It's hard to imagine a game of golf that doesn't have an emotional story while you're playing it. Golf Club Wasteland is a great example of this. Developer Demagog Studio provides a deep dive into ecological and economic decisions that will have profound effects on the human race and key individuals. This message is delivered in an amazing golf game wrapper. This should be on your radar if it isn't already. Golf Club Wasteland - This is a true gem.
The basic idea of Golf Club Wasteland is that Earth has been rendered uninhabitable by "The Great Catastrophe". All humans live on Mars now under strict authoritarian control and must use hazmat suits in order to survive. Although there are many restrictions, even the richest and most elite have found a way of continuing their luxurious lifestyles by moving to Tesla City. They further extend their luxury lifestyle by visiting Earth to play radioactive-golf. The story is told through journal entries, where each hole is completed under par. These are some of the most eye-opening and disappointing things that you will discover on this journey.
The game features an eclectic soundtrack, which is made up of fictional tracks from 2020 that are played over the radio. There are many great tunes I would listen to outside of the game to hear. You are the golfer listening to Radio Nostalgia From Mars. Although it's not a common name, it conveys the essence of the event. It will be a chance to hear from people who were there before the Great Catastrophe. This will give homesickness a new meaning. This multi-perspective view paints a picture that shows desolation, despair, and despair at not-so-unimaginable levels.
You play a lot of this game, since it is a golf game. There is no movement. It's not possible to move the ball directly. You can use a jetpack to reach the destination, no matter how far it is. You can also walk to it if you are within walking distance. The jetpack will slow down your character as he travels long distances. You should play this game in a relaxed way to absorb the visuals and the words. However, it can feel slow at times. After completing the tutorial, you will be able to choose from one of three difficulty levels or modes. Story mode is intended for casual play. It allows you to get all the story and strokes above par will not prevent you from progressing. To advance to the next hole, Challenge mode requires you to score par or below. For those who are looking for it, the later modes can be a bit more difficult. Iron mode is the final option. This mode allows you to make no mistakes. You'll find a lot replayability in this game, and you'll want to get every story you can.
I used a gamepad to play the game. It was easy to control the game by dragging the thumbstick in the desired direction and pressing A. The trajectory projected by the arrow on-screen was not accurate and neither is the arrow it shows. To predict where the ball will go, you need to do some planning and guesswork beyond what the UI tells you. To improve your score, you will likely need to restart the game due to the imprecise controls. You can't use the quick restart button. Instead, you must pause and wait for the animation to start, then choose the option to restart the level. This would improve the quality of your life, especially for future playthroughs.
This unique Earth course features 35 holes. Rules of golf no longer apply. You'll find ones with 18 strokes per par as you move on. These are intricate and detailed levels. Many will include shortcuts or other tricks to reduce the stroke count. You can seem to get a hole in one on anything. It is a joy to uncover their secrets. Aside note: I love the way the golfer reacts when they miss a shot near the flag.
Even though Earth is now toxic, it still has beautiful vistas. This is evident in the game's art, which displays a stunning oblivion. The color palette is dominated by pinks and light blues. Neon signs are visible in the horizon as the power continues to hum after all these years. These are abandoned, dismal places that you can't even see the transformation they have become. Every area is unique, and although there are some old memes, they're appropriate for a world that was lost decades ago.
Golf Club Wasteland was an enjoyable surprise. From the solid gameplay to the moving stories, it was a pleasant surprise. It took me three hours to complete the first game. I was infatuated by the experience and wanted more. Thanks to the other modes, I was able to do it. The game is a bit slow, though, making it difficult to get around. Also, the inability to restart quickly in more challenging modes makes it less enjoyable. It is a very emotional game and deserves all it has to offer. Golf Club Wasteland has a touching story that everyone should experience this year.
